Hi all
Most of you know that Kylie had an eye op a while ago to for a condition known as cherry eye. All is fine apart from on occasion she wakes up with greenish gunk in her eye, we've tried anti-biotic eye drops, and they clear it up for a few days then it's back again. Do you think it would be safe to use saline eye drops to just wash the eye every day?? I haven't had chance to ask the vet yet. What's your opinion??

Hi Alison,
as natural tears are mildly saline I wouldn't have thought a very weak solution would do any harm. It's the sort of thing that is recommended for human eye problems, after all.
Hope she improves soon.

That's what I htought because I had to use them on my little boy earlier this year, so I guess the one's I bought for Declan 12 month old baby will more than likely be ok for Kylie. I will ring the vet tomorrow though just to double check.

I took Willis (Great Dane) to the vets the other day and he noticed that Willis 3rd eyelid (?) is turning out on itself...I've noticed this since he was about 3 months, but not done anything as the eye is not sore... the vet wants to operate if it does become sore... I remember you talking about Kylies - how is hers now? What was it like in the beginning - was her eye sore?

Kylie's eye was really sore as the gland was really inflamed and had been protuding (completely out) for quite a while, approx 12 months maybe even longer.
When I read up on it the only way to go was have it tacked back into place, sadly for Kylie's breed a Neo it just simply doesn't work, the gland came back out of place. So was then removed completely.
I've put two links in the first has two pictures and Kylie's looked worse than the first picture ( the inflamed one ). I suppose it all depends really on how far the gland is actually out on willis. The trouble with it is even if it doesn't look sore it does interfere with their sight.

Willis's is much flatter than those - and it seems to have a tiny lip on the edge that is (according to the vet) starting to curl over (away from the eye)... Its not hugely noticable - its pink and the line across is black...does that sound like a possible cherry eye to you?

Waht you've described doesn't sound like cherry me to me but I have only experienced it the once. I'm wondering if it's possibly ectropion or entropion, though I've no experience of either of these. I've just done a quick search on google and it does sound like it could be ectropion.

Do a search and see what you think?? Put "ectropion in dogs" into google make sure you put dogs though otherwise you get human info.
