A system set up by a Puppy Retail Outlet to try, one asumes, to fool people into thinking that the pup they buy is registered with the Kennel club. It means nothing, it is a commercial pet selling organisation registering their own stock and anyone elses who are silly enough to pay them money.

I just looked that up. What a ridiculous concept. Dear me..and I suppose people are taken in by it and assume they have a good dog..well.....If people dont do the proper research before getting a dog...they can expect to not get a very good one. I cant believe that in this day and age, some people still know naff all about dogs (people who set out to get one and just blatantly know sod all). I wish that supposed animal help charities...eg RSPCA would open their eyes to this and do something about it.
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 25.07.03 13:09 UTC
I don't think people are *silly* to buy them . It is simply that they don't know .

I would have no idea what to look for if I went to buy a horse or a car ..I could well get duped ...luckily I have the wherewithall to get information before I buy , but the vast majority of folks don't

The fault lays firmly with the sellers doing the duping IMHO

No, I dont agree.
I think that when people go into a huge commitment such as buying a dog, they should be sensible enough to do lots of research. When I got my first dog, I was only at school, but I didnt want to go in short sighted so I did a stack of research before hand.
Im sorry, but if people are serious enough about buying a dog, they would do ample research, KC registered dogs are talked about everywhere. They would only have to pick up a dog magazine to learn that their dog should come with a KC registration, and that the dog should be seen with the mother.
It is the ignorance of people that is keeping these sellers going.

"It is the ignorance of people that is keeping these sellers going"

that's a bit harsh. I imagine the sellers do their bit at persuading people that the KC registration is not as good as it seems which it isn't really.

I didnt mean it to come out harsh...but I do feel very sad when people continue to buy from these places, because I feel that if they had done research, then they would know better.
I am probably biased because I feel so strongly against places like puppy farms.

I do agree, the sellers do a damn good job in coming across all "sweet and innocent" but I stick by my point that if people did the research, then they wouldnt be taken in.
I mean, for example. Its like delboy trotter. We know better than to buy something from someone like him..but he puts on a good show.....so people should do plenty of research BEFORE even thinking of bringing a dog into the house. At the end of the day. A dog is there for aprox 15 years (unless you get a sick one from a puppy farm) so you want it to be as healthy and happy as possible.
And people shouldnt be so willing to shell out so much money without research. If it was a possession, or object you were going to buy (eg a DVD player or something), you would look around, look up on the internet, ask friends, read magazines etc...so why are dogs different?
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 25.07.03 13:44 UTC
The people who are selling are in a position where they KNOW what they are doing is wrong, they are well aware of it.

You are quite right , people *should* do research....but until they do ,the responsibility is with the sellers ..*they* are the ones who are taking advantage of ignorance and they are doing it deliberately.

The general public don't know what to look for ...so how do they find out? You say they should look on the internet , ask friends etc ...but who tells them exactly what to look out for?

WE know ..but then we are in the *business* so to speak :) People want dogs , they want a certain type of dog sometimes ...the vast majority of people will look for a puppy locally , that they can afford and that they can have soon. It is the way of the world unfortunately...rather than putting so much onus on the buyers we would be far better IMHO shutting down the people who supply puppy farms and vast pet shops .

Melody :)

PS ..the Del Boys of this world make a mint every day of the week and that should show you what folks are like, rather than how we would like them to be :)

Damn right Mel
I couldnt agree more. I just wish someone would shut them down.
And I do agree that the sellers know exactly what they are doing and basically ripping people off, makes me really mad..I just wish people would do serious research first though. Because the information is out there, they just have to look for it. I know the the kennel club registered dogs arent always the best but it would be a start to pay a visit to their webpage, and then, rather than look for somewhere local and cheap (yes, I know what you mean, some people dont want to go far...but sometimes for a decent dog, you must), then get books from the library...even consult a vet if necessaary...or post on here :) ..there is help out there.
But yes, the sellers really need their wrists slapped (and more for continuing to basically make money out of the un-knowing people)

Not everyone has access to the internet though. People may do research into how to care for the dog but I imagine it stops there for a lot of people.

Yes you are right. People dont look into which dog is best..what to look out for...health problems..etc.
I think consulting a vet would be a start. They would know all about health problems and what to look out for when selecting a litter. It is do-able. I just wish people would put the time in. There is no excuse really. I get very annoyed because...at the end of the day..half the dogs you see (at least) in rescue centres are there because the owner did not do adequate research before embarking upon such a commitment. And, that is again, a very sad scenario.

It has to be said, The Dog Lovers Register do a very good convincing advert in most AD Papers, prospective dog owners can hardly be blamed for believing that this is a bonafide (bonafido more like) alternative registration, after all the only difference between the two is the cost

In response to the post above, many people don't put that much effort into planning for a baby so planning for a dog?? - no chance!
- By mayhem [gb] Date 26.07.03 08:34 UTC
We all feel the same, but the fault lies in about a dozen different directions. Why do'nt you all make yourselves known in your individual geographical areas as the person to consult on buying a puppy. In my area a prospective pet owner will ring me and ask for advice on where to buy their new pet. Word of mouth is much more effective than internet sites. If you would like some posters to put up in your local shops please e-mail me, there are already 300 around the UK. and people do take notice.
- By steph n millie [gb] Date 26.07.03 20:35 UTC
I agree...many people can take the blame....these seller types make a very convincing display and make out that they are "the way to go"......but it is a shame that people cant double check things.
I also agree....people dont put this much effort into planning a ababy...but to me they are different. Dogs are so much more vulnerable. A baby, in 2 or 3 years time will be able to speak and tell you what is wrong if they feel ill....etc. They grow independent etc...but dogs...they remain as babies throughout.
Sorry....still majorly pi**ed off about that lab ad on ebay....
I get very wound up by puppy farmers and pet shop sellers....I wish that people were more aware....whoever takes the blame is irrelevent....they need to be stopped and people nee to be educated more ( on dogs )
Good idea Myhem...glad your back...havent heard from you for a while!
I recommend the posters to all!

Two programmes coming up one BBC and the other ITV on puppy farming , dog traders, and the advertising of both, just putting all my evidence together, we have so many that it is difficult to sift through, will let you know what dates.
