Hi Bramble my dog has just had a litter of 3 they are 2week old. Before she had them she picked up a cough and runny nose. The vet gave her antibiotics but she is still the same and now the pups have started sniffling.Got some synulox drops from the vets do you think they'll be o.k. Another dog of mine has a croaky cough and runny nose. She has had a swab test at the vets.Has any one had this problem the coughs been here for weeks. Any advice will be much appreciated

If the sniffles are a viral infection then A/B's wont work, though they may prevent bacterial secondry infection. IF the vet has no more tricks up his sleeve I would phone Ainsworths Homeopathic suppliers - details from their website www.ainsworths.co.uk and see what they suggest. theyw ill send you a tailor made remedy quickly. Homeopathic medicine often works really well and will do no harm at all, is not expensive and there are no nasty side effcts - they can be given together with the conventional medicine. Cross your fingers,it could be serious or they may shake it off easily. Good luck - just keep them warm and cosy - try not to let the temperature vary in their room/surroundings.

Sounds like kennel cough you need to be very careful what have your vets said or done to help as this can kill very young and old dogs go back to vets .Jackie
- By jaru1 [gb] Date 24.07.03 11:33 UTC
Have you had the problem. The vets are waiting for the swab test results to see what strain it is and have asked the lab to do a sensitivity test to see what will kill the bacteria. All this has stemmed from a pup I bought at eight week old and its costing me a fortune. And your saying the pups may die also. I feel Im getting nowhere. Have you any further advice?
- By corso girl [gb] Date 24.07.03 14:04 UTC
Hi has your vet told you that they all have kennel cough because i am not a vet BUT from all you have told us it really sounds as if it could well be KCough so they all need antibiotics and honey and a drop of lemon mixed together and try and let them lick it off spoon this helps there throat and the cough give this as many times as you can it is just the same as your child with a very bad cold on the chest so they need to be kept warm plenty of drinks get some Lectade from vets and yes if it is K.Cough then it can kill if it gets to bad lots of luck Jackie

Thanks for the advice. My vet has said kennel cough. The little pups are not coughing just snotty. They are on synulox drops. Will it be ok to give them honey and lemon they are only 2week old? The mother only coughs occasionally. I thought with kc they were coughing all the time. Anyway Ive paid £140 to find out what it is. Janet

Hi Janet just give the honey /lemon to the adults but make sure the pups are feeding well and keep them warm if you notice one not feeding well or off colour in any way get it to the vets which i am sure you would any way, what breed are we talking about? regards jackie
- By jaru1 [gb] Date 26.07.03 18:21 UTC
Hi Jackie
We are talking about CKCS. The pups dont seem any worse. They are putting on weight and feeding very well. I haven't had the results from the vet yet.I have a couple of other bitches pregnant so I am trying very hard to keep them seperated, but know I have to. I'll keep you informed. Janet

I'm going to play devils advocate here!!!

Just had a look back at previous posts by you

This is the second litter you have had in a matter of months, you have two more bitches pregnant, you don't appear to have much idea about whelping etc. you don't know anything about Kennel Cough.

Can I ask if you show your bitches?

Or are you just breeding for the sake of it.

It may not necessarily be Kennel Cough but if you have a number of dogs in your kennel, it may be some sort of bug that they are picking up from each other and would suggest that for their sakes that you get them all onto antiobiotics as they may continue to reinfect each other.

it does sound like youve got a bug going through your kennels------whats your affix, i wondered if id know you, i know a few in cavs, as you seem to be breeding on a very big scale i might of seen some of your dogs in the ring, you do show i suppose ?????
- By jaru1 [gb] Date 27.07.03 08:13 UTC
If you had read them properly you would have noticed that this is the only litter I have had. And yes I have had a few problems that is why I came on to the forum. Not to be growled at! The bitch that has just had pups was my friends, she came to me already pregnant because she wasnt wanted, I thought Id done the right thing by taking her in because she knew me. I couldnt let her go anywhere. Think before you judge!
- By dizzy [gb] Date 27.07.03 15:59 UTC
you stated you sold a pup that had problems. and it came back ???????? if you dont explain yourself properly, how are we meant to guess different , infact you go as far as to say your new to breeding [oops] must of been confused
bugga!!!! you even say a bitch of yours!!!!!!! no wonder we all got it wrong, !!!!!!!!

Sorry but I quote in the thread Puppy back through Diarrohea dated 28.6.03

"I sold a pup and 2 week later was asked to take it back because It has diahorrea. They've taken it to the vets but they are worried of running up a bill and its still not right. Whats the best thing to do as I have taken it back for them it has a slight runny nose otherwise it is running round without a problem. But they say they are not having it back until its solid. Can anyone help."

and in this thread:

"Hi Bramble my dog has just had a litter of 3 they are 2week old."

and also:

"I have a couple of other bitches pregnant so I am trying very hard to keep them seperated, but know I have to."

So if you sold a puppy you had to take back in June and now have a 2 week old litter and have two more pregnant bitches, that if my maths are right, adds up to 4 litters in 4 months. An awful lot in anyones book.

Lady Dazzle, I think that some of these folks thing we're daft!!
The one thing that I find difficult is to help the genuine ignorant people for the sake of the dogs, and yet not to encourage the backyard "let's make a fast buck breeders", and get known as the board where all questions can be answered, making their life too easy!!
- By jaru1 [gb] Date 27.07.03 17:28 UTC
Genuine ignorant people stuck up or what. Your'e obviously not a people person.
- By Val [gb] Date 27.07.03 17:42 UTC
Much more interested in the welfare of the poor used dogs, but have no time for the people breeding who have no interest in the breed or their dogs, just interested in producing puppies to sell!!
Not an easy line to tread Lady Dazzle. I'm usually very selective who I respond to, but I feel so sorry to those who spend time answering questions, only to be disappointed when they find they are encouraging a backyard breeder.
- By Val [gb] Date 27.07.03 17:53 UTC
Jaru, the dictionary definition of ignorant is "wanting knowledge or information". Genuine people wanting knowledge or information are ignorant or they wouldn't be asking. It is not a derogatory term!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 27.07.03 18:29 UTC
Val, it's another person who thinks "ignorant" means "stupid"
:)
- By Lady Dazzle [gb] Date 27.07.03 17:37 UTC
Thanks Val

I think you have hit the nail on the head, how do you distinguish one from the other???

Jayne :-D

Your'e all as bitchy on here as they are in the ring! Goodbye I'll manage fine myself.
- By dizzy [gb] Date 27.07.03 18:39 UTC
bye then !!!! get on with your puppy farming, its the wrong board for it im afraid, !!!!! and the show folk bitchy  never :D
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 27.07.03 18:44 UTC
Jaru, we are more than happy to help people who are genuine and care about their dogs. People who lie to us, and generally abuse our trust, can take a hike.

Which are you?
- By Steph33 [gb] Date 27.07.03 20:51 UTC
I just can't believe all that !!! How shocking was she !!! A puppy farmer asking for advise?? Does she think you're/we're all "ignorant" (as in her use of the word. Well said to her, you guys.
Steph xx
