hi there please someone give nme some advice,i was wondering at what age is the best to breed my male jack russell terrier
- By Dawn-R Date 24.07.03 19:27 UTC
Hi Thumper, It's best not to breed him at all unless he's an outstanding specimen of his breed, either in the show or working field, and is a consistent winner. Then he should pass all the neccessary health tests. You should also know that occasional stud work might break his temprament.

Just spotted your other post on this same subject. Why are you in such a rush to put this 5 month old puppy to stud?

Well Dawn I would guess that it either because the poster knows nothing about dogs or finds talking about Breeding a turn on.
- By Dawn-R Date 24.07.03 19:53 UTC
Hi Jackie, I'm thinking Fast Buck.

I'm thinking juvenile, talking about 'breeding' what an excitement to such an immature age.
- By thumper73 [gb] Date 25.07.03 07:22 UTC
thanks for all you replies as for me being in a rush to breed him thats rubbish,he is a great pup all already as one competions and as for it being a turn on thinking about breeding him u are sick ,im a mother of 5 with several dogs not just 1 jack russell so could u please keep your sick mind to others thanks,
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 25.07.03 08:15 UTC
In which case if you have so much experiance of breeding and dogs why did you ask the question? Just interested, as you must know that you should not breed a dog or a person until it is adult. Once it is adult you will have a better idea of if it is good enough for you to even consider breeding. And what makes you think we have sick minds, don't think anyone suggested anything perverse.

Thumper, as one competitions, I would be facinated to read the list of competitions your 5 month old puppy has won, he's obviously been a busy boy in the last two months, being as he will only just have completed his puppy vaccinations at 12 weeks ( 3 months).

They have to be 6 months to show.. ( not sure about agility but I doubt you would being doing that at such a young age well not a lot of winning)

Pam

Are they not called Parson Terriers now anyway?? ..
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 25.07.03 09:12 UTC
Don't think they will allow agility until they are fully grown about 18 month to 2 years and they have to have a good standard of obedence (sp) too.

Thanks Jackie,

I am have no agility knowledge.

Thumper37, not once said that she bred her other 7 dogs, and all breeders had to start from somewhere, even you had to learn about genetics and breeding before you bred dogs so how about giving people ago, ooh and as for showing your puppies it depends on where your from in Australia you can show them at the age of 3 months, and agility classes are from 6-8 motnhs for puppies, so before jumping in and jumping to conclusions think back to when you needed help with something and people answered back with the rudeness that you did!!!!!!!!
- By minicooper [au] Date 27.07.03 09:26 UTC
I am also from Australia.
You are half right! You can put a dog in the show ring at 3 months, but it is only for practice. They don't earn any points until 6 months old. Between the ages of 3 and 6 months, a dog could win hundreds of shows, but never gain a point towards a Championship!

What competitions would those be, Thumper?
- By ace [gb] Date 25.07.03 11:07 UTC
Maybe she means exemption type competions
- By Lily Munster [gb] Date 25.07.03 14:03 UTC
Even "companion" dog shows, they have to be at least 6 months old do they not?
- By Jane [gb] Date 25.07.03 14:40 UTC
sounds like a child post to me.

As I said before uninformed and childish.

Hi, i am not here to put you down or belittle you like others, but i think you should wait until he is about 12 months old, that way you can tell if his temperament is good if his health is good and free from disease, dont be in a rush to breed think it through first, whats the reason you wont to breed? If you decide to breed, please take care, dont go in blind folded, as they cost a lot of money to vaccinate, feed and the cost of general care, if you breed correctly you dont actually make money, if you do your doing something wrong!!!
Good luck and ignore others.

thanks Talara for being nicer than others,as for me having 7 dogs i didnt even say that ,i own 3 dogs but his my first jrt male,im not even in any rush to breed from him at all,i may not even breed from him anyway,i have breed dogs before as have my family members, all i did want was some advice on the best age to breed him, as all breeds are different its just some people jump to the wrong conclusions, and IF i do breed form him in the future it will be done proberly, anyway dont even think im gonna bother with this forum as some people can be so rude thanks again Talara.

Hi Thumper
What sex and age are your other 2 dogs-are they castrated/spayed???Breeding your male could cause serious problems in his relationship with your other dogs.

hi thumper

I would say that the dog should be at least 2-3 years of age before u breed from him anyway good luck and have a good read up first.
