Hi - can someone please give me the website address for this club - I seem to be having problems accessing it. Me & my partner are currently looking for a breeder who will be having a litter in the next couple of months. We are only wanting the dalmation as a pet not to go on to breed. We have done alot of reading and have spent time with a dalmation breeder who has given us a great deal of insight into this breed. I just wanted to get onto the website to see if I can find any breeders. Thanks.

Hi,
Go to the Dalmatian Telegraph site where you'll find all the various club contacts, and a puppy list too!
Good luck - let me know how you get on.
:)

Hi- Thanks for that - it was really helpful. Are you a dalmation owner?

Hi again, sorry for the delay in replying - just getting my last holiday in before the big 'dog commitment'! We have actually found a breeder whose bitch will be having a litter in october - can you give me any advice on exactly what to look for when we go to see the litter for the first time, to help us decide which is the 'best' one to have. We have a friend who is a vet - do you think it is a good idea to ask her along?

Hi

1. are the breeders members of the BDC?
2. are the puppies hearing tested?
3. are they bred and raised in the home?
4. who is the sire?
5. is the breeder well known - do they have an affix?

in addition, you need to look for the following:

1. well socialised, happy puppies
2. warm, well fed, puppies
3. responsive puppies

Let us have the above info and we can help you further :)

Thanks Chloeh, I really appreciate your reply - I know that the litter is not expected until October so I will probably come back to you for more advice nearer the time.
By the way - if the puppy has been BAER tested, should there be a certificate to back this up as proof?

Debbie.

Hi Debbie,
If you click on my name you will get my email addy - contact me and I will help as much as I can (I have had dalmatians since 1973).

Certainly make sure the pups have been BAER tested, and ideally the breeder will be a BDC member who will be breeding in accordance with the Code of Conduct.
:)

Thanks Jan - I certainly will, it is great to find someone who has lots of knowledge and who isn't quick to tell us what a dreadful mistake we are making by getting a dalmation!
I'm pretty certain that the breeder we have spoken to is registered with the BDC as I think it was her who recommended us to check out the site.
Thanks once again for your advice - I'm sure I will need it again nearer the time when the pups arrive.

Debbie.

Yes, every puppy BAER tested has a certificate outlining whether it can hear in both, one or neither ear. So no excuses from breeders!
:)

but a puppy with hearing in only one ear (bilateral? - i can never remember) is perfectly good enough for a pet home...
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 08.08.03 19:37 UTC
Bilateral is both ears.... ;)
True. A potential breeding pup must have bilateral hearing, but a unilateral makes a perfectly normal pet. Their behaviour is no different.
- By Carla Date 08.08.03 20:21 UTC
unilateral - duh! - you would think the "uni" bit would give it away!! I've been out of dallies for too long :(
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 08.08.03 21:41 UTC
Does that mean you're about ready for another one?
- By Carla Date 08.08.03 21:44 UTC
i would if I could, but to be totally honest, as much as i love the breed and would LOVE a bitch again, I can't cope with the moulting :( You have to be so committed (literally) ;)
