hi, my lab has just had 9 puppies. she cant handle them all and some are getting weak as they arent getting enough milk. is it ok to give them powdered baby milk replacer? or do you need special puppy milk?

Somone with far more knowledge is likely to come along soon but even having never bred dogs myself I'm sure it is proper puppy replacement milk you need rather than baby milk

Hi, how old are the puppies? The bitch won't start getting her milk in fully until about day 3 or 4, and the more the pups suck, the more she'll produce as long as she is getting plenty of food and plenty to drink herself. Human baby milk isn't really suitable as it is designed to be similar to human milk, not bitch's milk. Cows milk is even worse. Most pet shops will sell "Lactol" or "Welpi" which are good substitutes, but if the pups are very young (a day or two) they will need replacement colostrum, which your vet may be able to provide. Otherwise, someone who has handreared pups will know. If at all possible get the pups suckling as much as you can - 9 puppies is an average sized litter for a lab so in theory she should be able to feed the all okay. Good luck.

Hi you must sit and place each pup on a teat you some times have to gently open there mouth and let them clamp on stay there while she feeds them dont let to many people come in and out she must have peace a place where the kids cant get to her once she starts to feed she will be fine pups just need your help for a day or two every two hours make sure she is feeding them, dont go off and leave her for to long and yes if really needed it must be puppy milk best of luck Jackie
