Any one had any problems with the stud dog being unable to 'enter' the bitch? The dog I have used is very experienced and will only mate the bitch at the required time, she would stand but he could not enter fully or tie and he was in some discomfort when he tried to penetrate. I have looked on the internet and the only thing I can come up with is 'vaginal striction'? anyone had any experience of this & if so what did your vet do to help. She is a maiden bitch and we would really like a litter out of her before she is too old. (she is not an up and over bitch - for those who know what that means!)

A stricture is a tough hymen. Sometimes a persistant stud dog will do the trick, others need surgical intervention from the Vet. Maybe worth talking to your Vet before too many days pass. Some Vets are not experienced in these things and delay doing anything until the next season, others who have done it before, will give a quick snip and send you straight back to the dog!!

I have left it too late for this time. She is booked in at the vets for Tuesday for him to sedate her and 'have a look' so hopefully he will be able to give me more information. It is getting quite desperate now though as she only comes into season every 9-10 mths & we have wasted 4 seasons (1 infertile dog, In-experienced dog & this was the second attempt with the experienced dog at the time I just thought it was them not her! ) and she will be 5 within the next couple of months. I will give you an update after Tuesday. But thanks for the concern.

Hi,
Sometimes bitches can have an “up and over” shape to their vagina. The vulva appears normal but upon entry the stud dog finds what is effectively dead end as the vagina is angled upwards. The normal position for penetration is the penis is inserted a small way and at an angle and then full penetration is achieved. A vaginal examination will confirm this.
We have found that our boys are assisted greatly if the bitch is held so she virtually stands on her back feet with her body upright. This seems to help the dog get up and over and once this is achieved the mating takes place normally. Certainly you need a willing dog to mount a bitch that is almost vertical herself and depending upon the breed/size of the bitch you will need someone strong to support her weight.
Good luck next time around.

We had an Irish wolfhound bitch who was difficult to mate due to this problem. The vet did the necessary treatment the next time she was in season and on the vets advice she was duly mated as often as possible, not a problem as we also owned the Stud dog.
Sadly it was all to no avail. She had one large dog puppy which had to be born by C-section. He died after half an hour and sadly the bitch died later that day.
I always swore after that, that if things don't happen naturally then its not meant to be.
It also took me a long time to decide to mate my next Wolfie bitch. Of which I worried about for the full 9 weeks, after 3 very easy matings. Happily in her case she whelped 10 puppies very easily.
But if things have to be tampered with I would say, Leave Well Alone!!

I have a five yr old bitch who is an 'up & over' and she has had two litters with no problems. This bitch has a problem with fibirous growth over the muscular ring. If the bitch was mated earlier in life then the growth would be easy enough for the stug dog to penetrate. Ai is an option but I would be concerned with puppies getting stuck coming out. I need to have a word with a specialist vet (breeding expert) my vet has sugested penetrating it under sedation/anes. Not sure what to do now. Apart from being an excellent example of the breed (she had got pup of the year and 3 rcc's) she is also clear of all the heriditary problems that our breed is associated with at the moment, she is also the last of the original line type.
