Can anyone recommend any good
sensible books/websites about veganism?
My 17-year old nephew, who I saw for the first time for ages, looks
so thin and frail :( . I'm sure he's not eating enough protein, but what is there apart from soya?
Nuts! And lentils, sure there are more (tofu?)

Try the Vegetarian Society Uk website.
Sorry Jeangenie can't do links.
It gives helpful links on nutrition/books etc.....

If he was only vegetarian it wouldn't be a problem...... I'll have a look at the site, though - thanks for the tip. Kids, eh?

Kidney beans..in fact, all beans (but the after effects might not be so nice :) )
yep, lentils are great...nuts...they will build up his weight and protein, make things with peanut butter in...
good recipe for lentil + bean risols:
kidney beans
butter beans
lentils
chick peas
peanut butter
egg
flour
salt + pepper
Mix it all in a bowl ( after softening the dried lentils in a pan of boiling water)
then make into burgers and fry for a couple of mins each side. Taste great and v healthy.
You can replace peanut butter with anything...pesto (mmmm, my fave), coconut, anything you like...and add variations like grated carrot, onion, herbs, spices etc...a really healthy and tasty tea.

Thanks, Steph - I'll copy that out and post it to him.

fillet steak? ;) yum yum

Oh if only, Chloe....!
:)
Linda McCartney does some nice ready meals (not sure which ones are vegan - would need to check the ingredients) I can recommend the Shepherds Pie, Toad in the Hole and Fake burgers - it is amaxing how real they taste when you haven't eaten red meat for a while

This is what I can't understand, if you chose not to eat meat -like me - why do food producers produce food that tastes like meat?

If I wanted to eat something that looks & tastes like chicken, why not eat chicken itself?

I don't eat meat because I don't like eating dead animals, not because I don't like meat, so meat substitutes are great. It's not rocket science is it?

Same here jane.
I dont choose to not eat meat because I dont like the tase, I chose to be vegetarian because I couldnt stand the thoughts of animals being slaughtered, kept in poor conditions etc etc. I decided 11 years to stop eating meat, firstly It started by not eating rabbit as I had pet rabbits...but then I just stopped altogether (including chicken and fish :) )

Margot, that's fab! You may have a gold star!
:)

Rather have a large fillet steak, rare, myself I'm afraid, but good luck to these people with principles :D
Oh, and Marina rather than Margot, before I get saddled with that ......... apologies to all Margots, but says Margot Leadbetter from The Good Life to me ;)

Whoops, sorry Marina :o :o Genuine mistake, no offence intended! :)
(A nice rare garlicy rib-eye steak does it for me!)

Mmmmm, mouth watering now - sorry to all vegans who thought this might be an interesting thread, and are now reading about steak .............

oh i love fillet - with a salad and a good stilton sauce, bottle of red.... bliss

I'm with you on the stilton sauce Chloe, but you can keep the red wine - cheap or expensive, all tastes like vinegar to me .............
M.

Sorry, Chloe, but the words "good" and "Stilton" do
not belong in the same sentence! I'll join you in a bottle or two of a decent red, to wash down the mushrooms, onions, chips.......
(What's the best way to get dribble out of a keyboard?!)
:)

LOL .......... we're BAAADDD!! :D

best not invite you two to dinner at the same time then!!

:D :D

I don't see why not - more sauce for you two, more wine for us two.....what do I like that neither of you do? Then I can have all three portions!
:D

Sounds good to me, when shall we come .......... we'll even wash up afterwards (or load the dishwasher!?!).

Less the stilton and the red wine :( :(

Oh a lovely fillet steak with lots of lovely peppercorn sauce with chips and fresh peas and salad, open cup mushrooms, coleslaw, ummmm what else........ :D
Lucy

OK, really hungry now ............ :D

I knew I had forgotten something !
I have decided on puddin as well. Jam rolly polly with lovely thick custard !!
I have decided as only have 9 days( yes in single figures now :D ) to go I am going to eat what I really want as have been quite good and not pigged out too much but have had enough of being good now !!! :D
Lucy

Puddings, now......well, fresh fruit salad with creme de cassis is always a possibility, or summer puuding with port poured over it, or a nice traditional English sherry trifle (absolutely
no jelly or tinned fruit)....can you see a theme developing here...
Addition: or for a hot pud, then Sussex Pond Pudding with custard is always a winner, and (so far) non-alcoholic.

strawberries and cream - but not those pathetic little strawberries we've seen lately, big, bold, ripe, red, tasty, juicy strawberries, dash of cream...

Big fat vanilla creme brulee for me .............. or the chocolate mousse with brandy snap and raspberry sauce I had for lunch yesterday ............. :D
M.
I throw away the Cheddar when it has mould on it, so cannot eat Stilton!, lemon and dill sauce for me, (on Salmon though, not steak) - I'll have to have it tonight now I've thought of it! :)

mmmmm steak diane or djion mustard are my favouites, unfortunatley i am on a diet, so i could have steak but no sauce.

Oh dear, Hayley - mouldy Cheddar is the ideal dog training treat in our house! Throw it away?

Perish the thought!
:)
Never thought of that, it does rather turn my stomach. Honey gets Kabanos (polish garlic sausage) at agility, it works so well that even the dogs wirth liver cake are after it!
Hayley
Would you like me to post the mouldy stuff to you, should work wonders after a couple of days with Royal Mail! :)

Oooh yes, they'd mug the postman! :D

I cut the bit off the cheddar that's got the mould on - the rest is ok :)

No, no, no - I'm not like THAT Margot - more like Tom next door (yeh - well I'm afraid that bumbling, inept, etc is far more me than the Barbara character) - I'm not the least bit dainty!!!! - and I don't even own a doiley!!!!
Margot - fairy elephant more like!!
PS me - I'll hve the fillet steak, and the wine plus stilton & peppercorn sauce, with a watercress salad!

Shall I bring an Aubergine & lentil bake for the lad??

No, he's not invited! This is for omnivores only.
:)

Well, barely disguised carnivores really ............. I know we diversify on posts sometimes, but this one is excelling itself - from vegan to rare steak in a couple of easy steps LOL :D

I can't believe that none of you have discovered Tipsymasu :D :D Its just the thing to follow a decent steak :)
Just follow the usual Tiramisu recipe and swap the amounts of coffee and Tia Maria :D, a good cupful/mugful of Tia Maria and a couple of tablespoons of very strong coffee instead of the other way around.......heaven :D

I thought that was how it was
meant to be made....

;) :D

I just finished a fillet steak, salad with a ceasear dressing, with chunks of mediteranean (sp?) bread... deeeelicious.
I'm also 3/4 if the way down a good bottle of red.
Thank you CD for the inspiration for this evenings meal - bliss ;)

I'm having a boiled egg...... :( Whoop-de-doo.

The talk of strawberries and cream earlier promted me to ask has anyone had the same experience we went to our local market garden and they had 2 trays of strawberry's looked identical but one was 50% cheaper than the other, when ask why they said that because the 50% strawberry's were not standard EEC shape they had to be sold as seconds, bought twice as many and tasted just the same
