A friend of mine would like to know about Newfoundlands. He would like a dog which is good with children and would also protect his property. My mother-in-law had two Newfoundlands and I think they are very soppy dogs. Can you please clarify if this breed is right to protect the house.
Thanks

Depends on the individual dog. I have two newfies at present. One would help a burgular carry out the goods but the other would give a very threatening bark (but that I think would be all). Having said that the size alone is enough to make most intruders pick an easier house. And good with children.... well that depends on the children and the parents as much as the dog. My boy newfie came to me at 6 mths as he was too hyper with the family's child, but then the same dog with my 6 year old grandson is kindness itself and doesnt like him to stray when out on a walk! If the priority is to protect property I would not recommend a newfie to be honest. They are a lot of hard work as they love to get wet and muddy and their coat needs constant grooming, worth it to me but not to everyone.
