as you can probably tell we are new to this site, could you please tell me once a dog has been micro chipped is it for life or do you have to have it renewed after a certain amount of time, he had already been done when we had him.

thanks

The microchip implant is USUALLY a once in a lifetime procedure.......although I get my dogs scanned when they are at the vets for boosters etc. just to check that the chip is still where it should be. I've never had one move, but have heard of the odd case where they have migrated or even disappeared!

You will however, have to change the ownership details as your dog will still be registered as belonging to the person that originally had him microchipped.

yes have already changed all the details but couldnt find any information on paperwork or website as regards the lifetime of the chip, i think i will ask them to check the chip when i take him to the vets to have his nails clipped,

thanks

The chip will still be there, but it may have 'moved' as the dog grew. Get the vet to run the scanner over the dog to locate the chip and assess that it is still in working order and in a sensible place. Then you will need to contact the chip details centre (there is more than one company that do this) and log your details with them, so that in the event of the dog being lost it is YOU they contact not the previous owner, when the dog is picked up.

There might be a 'change of details' charge and they might need written acknowledgement from the previous owner that you are the new owner.
