Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / 8 week old chow, need help
- By bosley [ca] Date 22.07.03 09:18 UTC
I have an 8.5 week old chow. I have had him since he was 6 weeks old. He has learned to sit before he gets food and is pretty well house trained but I can not get him to stop biting my socks when I am wearing them or my clothes. Everytime I pet him all he wants to do is chew on my fingers. He does not chew hard but I have tried every thing I know to get him to stop. When he bites my socks I make him let go and give him dog toys that he can chew on. I have told him no in a stern voice when he is chewing on my socks, also put him outside in his sleeping place for a time out, picked him up and shaken him by the back of the next gently and even growled at him to learn to stop but he keeps on doing it anyways. He does not do it with my kids but evey time he see me he goes crazy and wants to chew on my clothes and my feet. Is an 8 week old Chow puppy to young to learn to stop this type of behavior or am I just doing it wrong. Any suggestions from anyone would be great.

Hi Bosley and welcome to the Forum :)

If you use the search facility at the top of the forum page and type in BITING , you can find loads of threads on this subject. It is a common problem that the majority of new owners have to deal with , so you are not on your own :)

Could you get in touch with your breeder to give you a bit of back up?

MElody :)

Its completely normal, you've got a few more weeks of it if you handle it properly.

So follow the advice; its good ; and it does work

my lab stopped mouthing completely at about 12 weeks (ish) and our friends dog still does it at 8 months old becasue the never stopped her!!!
