I have to admit that i havent taken her temperature yet as i say this is my first time, is it essential that i do this? Are they quite happy for us to keep taking there temperature? I assume they probably are so maybe i should buy a thermometer, its just that i can see her giving me that leave me alone look and making me feel guilty!!!!!

I didn't with my litter - I just waitied. Mine were born on August 1st, so it was hard to tell whether the panting was through heat or whelping! All I can say is that when Scrabble had her pups she actually came and fetched me - I knew it was imminent and I was having a brief lie down (it was midnight), and she came to get me...I went back to her whelping box with her and the first one arrived. You can actually see the contractions. Its a brilliant experience (when it all goes well) :)

what do the contractions look like?
- By Carla Date 16.07.03 11:32 UTC
with mine, she lay down, curled round, and you could see the whole of her back end tensing and pushing down. A couple of those and then a puppy would appear...but, I had a very straightforward birth...others may not be so straightforward...

i didn't take the temp of my girl as i thought she had enough to put up without me constantly prodding her in sensitive areas!!! :P besides i didn't need to know her temp- it was obvious she was going into labour as she was panting, nesting, whining, didn't want to be left alone and kept jumping onto the sofa bcos that was her chosen spot- tho it wasn't mine, i didn't buy a whelping box for nothing! :) overall i found that she had this horrible guilty look in her eyes which made me think why did i put her through this! but don't worry as soon as i saw her happily feeding her pups i knew it was all worth it! my girl came on day 59 and like yours is a spaniel so you may only have a few nore days to wait. it was a first litter 2 like your girl and i was told by my breeder that 1st timers usually come quite early. neway good luck with your girl- hope everything goes ok :) sure it will - let us know how you go on!

I have had a bitch whelp a healthy single puppy at 70 days after her only mating. The early contractions can be missed if you are not watching and they are just tensing of the muscles, if you put your hand on the tummy you can feel the muscles go hard under your hand and then relax again. Later with proper pushng contractions, most of mine stand up and they curl themselves up like they are having a poo (sorry its the eaiest way to describe it!) and push like crazy - they sometimes grint or whine a bit. Some very house clean first timers think they need to go outside as they dont know whats happening - whatever you do dont let her unless on a lead (take a torch after dark) - as she may well have a puppy outside, not realise, and leave it there. You cant miss the proper contractions, they are very obvious in almost all bitches.

The time to speak to the vet is if there are pushing contractions, getting closer together and then slowing down/stopping. As with us they start far apart, say every 10-15 minutes and near to producing the first pup are usually only a couple of minutes or less apart. If they slow down/stop and no puppy is produced within 2 hours of the first push, ring the vet for advice. Also I have experienced bitches who push in the "wee" as opposed to "poo" stance - this can mean there is a pup poorly presented and may need help delivering it.

It may be that your bitch did not actually conceive for a couple of days after mating and that is why they appear to be late. Good luck.
