Topic Dog Boards / Health / siberian husky not eating

My male husky is a little over a year old. I am really starting to get worried about him because his eating habits have really changed. He was eating two servings of food a day when he was a puppy. The vet said I needed to cut back to just one large serving a day when he was a year old. And now he has been only eating his food every other day. At first I thought it was a behavior problem because there has been some changes in the last three months. Three months ago we added a female American Cocker Spaniel, which has taken some attention off of him (we don't have any kids)! We also moved last month and have not been able to get a fence up yet so he is chained up during the day while we work. But then about two weeks ago he was really constipated to the point he was just walking around crying, so that is why I am scared he may have a health problem. I could not get into the vet until Friday, so I have been monitoring him extremely closely and this last week he has been eating like regular.
Does anyone know if this could be symptons for a health problem or suggestions for something that might help him want to eat?

Hi,

I vet check would seem to be in order, even considering the disruptions you mention.

I do not know the breed well, but large breeds like huskies are prone to bloat (gastric tortion) and better advice would have been to feed your dog twice a day. The same amount of food, split between morning and evening. Not essential, but better for the dog.

If he is eating every other day and his weight is appropriate (you can just feel his ribs when you stroke his sides) then this is really not a problem. Dogs were not meant to eat every day, their metabolisms are actually built for brief periods without food.

Also, if he is not eating his food, but is happy to eat treats - then he may be telling you that the food you have him on he really does not like.
