It's my mother's 80th birthday at the weekend, and although I have some vague ideas, I need help to think of something appropriate (without breaking the bank - cash-flow crisis :( ) I'm going down to visit her, so it needn't be something postable.

I hate buying older people pressies, my grandparents are normally happy with anything but i always phone up and ask now so i don't waste money. Still i normally get the same reply every christmas " get me a nighty or some slippers. If you really can't think of anything how about flowers and choclates, i love recieving flowers!!

why not make up a hamper with lots of goodies in it. Could be food, drink, soapy smellies. I do one for my in laws at christmas and also put in things like multi-vitamins, nice teas, coffees, cakes and biscuits, jam and a bottle of bubbly.

Or a dried flower arrangement that can be kept??
Does your mum collect any kind of china or figurines ?

I did a hamper for my Nan's birthday (82nd?), Treats like shortbread, posh preserves, continental chocs, and I included some M&S meals and smellies

For my other Nan, this year (81st) we took her for a lovely meal overlooking the Thames, then a drive around her old stomping ground, with my mum and daughter too - so 4 generations of the family

Of course a lot depends on mobility and how much your Mum does on a regular basis, my Nan's just appreciate a drive out or a trip to the garden centre and a cake - with of course the obligatory bunch of flowers

I'm taking her some Devon clotted cream (if it ever gets delivered :rolleyes: ) and 'connoisseur's' cider - two particular favourites, so if I add some nice scones, jam and tea, then we've got a cream tea-set.... (I'll leave the cider to her, it's not my drink).

I'll be there, and both my brothers, and my niece with her son, so there'll be 4 generations there - should be fun!

How about a nice family potrait with all her children/grandchildren. My mother did this for her parents on one of their b.days it was just all their children 5 girls and 1 boy. Very nice to see and they loved it, they also had one made up for each of them to keep. :)

Does she like plants? My one grandma just adored plants where my other one loved birds, cacti and raisin bread.

My mother inlaw just had her 60th b.day and her husband as well as her sister through her a big surprise b.day. Her hubby took her out for the day well her sister got everyone there and everything set up. A big huge B.Q and lots of presents. There were so many people there family and friends. U could get everyone together and have a big surprise birthday for her as well as all the family together and friends together. I think that would be nice and everyone can enjoy in the celebration as well as see everybody (a special occasion) I think it is well worth the effort.

Good luck in what u decide to do and I'm sure she will enjoy every minute of it, rememeber it's the thought that counts :)
