i thought my bitch was starting early with her pups things have settled down now .but for the last few days when she has gone to the loo if i dont get there first to clean it up she eats it .will this damage her pups i know there is a tablet you can buy to stop this but i have tried not to give her any medication except for pana cur worming granules .the main times that she does it is at night (you can see bits she has left)i dont scold her about it because i know accidents happen and i dont want to stress her with it any advice on this would be really welcomed

Is she hungry ? She may well need her food intake increasing ?
Just a thought ? :)
Lucy
One cause as already stated is that she may be hungry, another could be that she is keeping the area around her "nest" clean to prevent predators finding it, another could be that she is eating too much and it is not being digested properly as it passes though so she is having another go at it.

Have you bred a litter before? if so you will also have to be prepared for her cleaning up all her puppies poo as well.
I think the others are right she is very hungry have you increased her food?

thank you all for the advice but i cant see that she can be hungry she gets fed 4 times a day amedium meal of puppy food early morning 2 smaller meals through the day and a medium meal at the evening she also has a boiled egg and cottage cheese alternate days .i have also started giving her lactol .maybe this is not enough for her because even though i dont know how many pups she is having she is huge .she is still wanting to be exercised and still runs everywhere i take her out 4 times a day maybe she is getting too much exercise what do you think.it does not bother me cleaning up poo i have not bred a litter before but i have read lots of books and talked to a lot of breeders so i think i know most of the details about pups this mating has been planned for 18 months so i did my research before mating her

hamble is just the oposite!. wont eat at all. i have spent most of the weekend sat on the floor in front of her bribing her. took her to the vet this morning. she seems to think its just the heat and her only having ten days to go thats getting to her. she gave me some paste (picking it up tommorow as they had none in .....cant remember name...dohhhh) anyway aparently it contains all the vitamins she needs and i just have to get her to lick it from my fingers. she checked her over...temp was fine. just sent hubbs out for more chicken!! :) :).

Hi Tanni
Do you mean Enervite?
A good thing to help a dog eat is chicken soup, just open the can and allow
to reach room temp then serve :)
I wish you the best of luck with your litter....bulldogs isnt it?
We had our name down for a bulldog pup but the breeder lost all but one in the litter
so we are back to square one looking for a bulldog pup :( trouble is they are all booked BEFORE they are even born :(

why are you feeding a pregnant bitch on puppy food?
By susie mum

hi matti.
if you read any good book it will tell you to feed your bitch puppy food the last 3 weeks of pregnancy.I dont really know why i just assume there are more vitamins in puppy food than adults

Oh I mustnt of read that book then but suggest as good reading the book of the bitch by JM Evans and Kay white.
Its is said that if you already feed a good quality food with the correct vitamins and minerals then there should be no need to supplement the food.It is necesary however to increase the volume of food given and then after preganacy and during the feeding period I increase my bitches diet to almost as musch as she can eat. Also dont overdo the lactol JMHO

Hiya
High protein foods are a must for pregnant bitches, so I can understand the puppy food thing, however, I used Beta active, and it was brilliant for my GSD bitch.
Personally, if one of my bitches was eating her own faeces, I'd up her food intake. But as has been said, it could well be that she's trying to keep 'her area' clean'
I wouldn't worry too much, but I'd definitley try giving her a little more food....it sounds like she's having enough, but at this stage, my bitch was eating around 4/5 scoops per day...as much as she wanted really.
She still only put on the weight of the pups....and now she's back to her slim self.....(why can't we all be like that?!!)
Take care, hope all goes well,
Lisa
