Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Undescended testicle .... help please!

Our ten month old whippet has an undescended testicle which we gather means that neutering is pretty obligatory ... does anyone have any similar experiences or advice as to when would be the best time for the operation. Is around 2 years old the best age? Many thanks for any info.

i have a 11 wk old boxer and he has the same problem. i was told that if it hasn't come down by 1 yr then they would have to operate or it will cause problems with his tummy.

Without wishing to worry you an undescended testicle "can" turn cancerous .
Have you spoken to your vet yet regarding the best course of action ?

If your pups testical has not decended by the time he is 14 to 15 months, then it would be best to have the retained one removed. There is no need to remove the one that has decended and some times the retained one can be retrived but in your case I think that unlikely. Never use the dog to breed as the condision is thought to be inherited and the risk of passing it on should not be taken, please make sure your dogs breeder knows that he has this condition, so that they know they should not use the dam and sire again.
