I think it would be a good idea to upgrade my anti-virus software. What's the best (and preferably free!) download? What would you all suggest?

www.grisoft.com

i have AVG. which is very good.

I think that AVG is actually the download available from grisoft.com.

I had it on my last computer.....didn't get any viruses but computer went up in smoke due to being struck by lightening:(
The replacement machine (thank goodness for insurance) had Norton with it but personally, I don't think that it's any better than the free download from grisoft.

I had Norton on my new laptop, changed to AVG when year was up with Norton, can't see any differnce in the two except AVG is better for being free :)

Daft question, but how come these things are free? What's in it for the providers? I always go to download them, but stop thinking nothing's for free and something awful will happen to my computer...paranoid, me??? :)

Bobo - paranoia is understandable - you hear so many sorry tales - but Grisoft IS safe - honest:D They do what they call a professional upgrade that you have to uy and that's where they make their money as many do buy ot for the additional functions it has.

I have found Grisoft to be more reliable than Norton. I had some get through Norton - nothings got trough Grisoft and I've run it for about 2 years now.

Quite often the free version of downloaded programs have no technical support, or some of the features are disabled. But that hardly ever detracts from the programs usefullness.

Thanks for the advice, chaps - I downloaded that, ran it, and it deleted a worm and Badtrans, so I'm now clean (I hope!). A happy house!
:)
