Topic Dog Boards / Health / Haemophilia Tests
- By Krys [gb] Date 12.07.03 19:25 UTC
Is it just my vet or is it across the board that vets don't do the Haemophilia Test!! I have been told that I will need to send off to somewhere to get a testing kit, take it to the vet who will take the blood and then send it back to the people who supplied the kit to test!!! This seems like an awful long winded way of doing things. Has anyone else gone through this process?

Beck this is normal, I am at present waiting on DNA check swab results from the States as this particular disease test in our breed is new and there is no one else offering it. You have to request their kits for Check Swabs but for blood you can go direct to your vet and get it drawn and sent to the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket for the required assay testing.

There is a company in the USA offering DNA (check swabs) Von Willebrands disease testing in different breeds, I am assuming that is what you are looking to test for?

Hi Schip

This is the test I am refering to. It really does seem a strange way of doing things in this day and age, but it is obviously the correct way to do it, so I am happy with it.

Hi Beck

If your dog is a Dobermann then we have now a KC/Dobermann Breed Council testing scheme under way that does not have to go to the States - nor does it require the intervention of your vet as it is done by a cheek swab, and it is quicker!

Please contact me and I will give you more details (click on the Kerioak to get my email address)

Hi Christine

My boy is a GSD, but that is excellent news to hear that this scheme has been set up for the Dobermanns. Would be nice to see other breed councils follow suit. Do you know whether the Haemophilia and Von Willebrands Disease tests are done together or separate from one another?

Cheers Beck

Hi Beck

Haemophilia and vWD are totally different diseases - both cause bleeding but that is about the only similarity. Haemophilia affects males and is carried by bitches, vWD affects both dogs and bitches and is carried by both.

Hope your test results are good

Christine
