Hello again,
I need some advice on male dog anatomy. My male Westie (16months) was castrated almost 2 weeks ago and as far as i was aware was fine. He obiviously had pain and discomfort for a few days post op which i can tell you made me feel really guilty for putting him through it.
Here's the thing. Approx 30mins ago just before i took him out to wee i was on the floor playing with him and he rolled onto his back as usual for a belly tickle. I noticed a large hard lump 3/4 way down his penis.
It looked equal size on either side of the penis. The lump went away as i looked closer. Buddy rolls onto his back alot when playing/sleeping and i've never noticed this before.
Do male dogs have prostates and if so is that the location one would expect to find it. I thought the gland would be tucked away up inside the body just like blokes.
If you can throw any light on this please reply. You all know what it's like when you spot something you think is unusual at the weekend after the Vet's closed.

Hehe - my daughter asked the vet this when we took our male back to have his stitches out :) He's just a little excited - so to speak :D Probably more noticeable as he has been shaved :)

That's the 'glans penis'. It's a normal part of the male dog, and swells when the dog is 'excited'. During mating the bitch's muscles contract, and this swollen gland means the dogs 'tie' properly.

He, he! My daughter once took a pet Hamster to the Vets to have a lump examined , only to be told it was his testicles.

Budmag, you must be psychic! I was about to post exactly the same question, but was reading through the new posts trying to decide how to word it :D and found your question.
I have noticed this a couple of times with Dylan and wondered about it. I was coming to the conclusion (since it quickly disappeared every time) that it was a normal 'boy' thing! The last time I saw it was this morning when he first woke up, so I assumed he was just like a normal human male! :D :D
