hi
i have a 4month old GSD he is great walking off the lead except for when he sees a bike. To sum it up he goes crazy chases the poor rider and more or less like i said goes nuts.
Has anyone got a suggestion on how we can stop this, has we dont really want to keep him on the lead all his life.
thanks

Well, he's not trust worthy enough to be let off yet when bikes are around, soooo, have you got, or could you borrow a bike, so that you could train for the behaviour....seems the easiest way to me! ;)

No dog should be off lead on a public highway. If your dog is chasing bikes when in the park and off lead keep him on a lead untill you have taught him it is not acceptable.Borrow a bike and push it while walking your dog.Eventually ride the bike(SLOWLY) with your dog running along side.
Good luck,Archer

At 4 months he should not be doing much running anyway. It's not good for his hips. Note the advice others have given and keep the free running down until older.

My dog had a phase of being a bit too interested in bikes.
I took her to lots of places where people cycled, but didnt' get her too close, then treated/praised/played with toy ( I used a clicker as well) for good behaviour, then gradually moved her closer. You have to be a little aware of the dog's critical distance - you dont want him so wound up he gets to enjoy it more, or think he has chased the bike off or something! ideally to start you want to be far enough away that he barely reacts.
I did try letting my other half cycle past us, but that unfortunately was a dismal failure as our girl got very very overexcited at seeing him do this! Even slowly!
You may also find it very helpful to invest in a toy such as a Kong on a rope, so that can be a rewrd for good behaviour or a distraction in the early days too. Most chase orientated dogs love this sort of toy and it can really help to keep them out of mischief.
Dont leave it lying around - try to keep it as a special toy, just for walks or training :)
Good luck.

Hi I agree with the other posts a Gsd at 4 months should not be running it does the joints no good at all, keep him on a lead whilst walking, short walks only, and take him to places where people cycle past, gradually he will learn that this is a NO NO. HE MUST NOT DO IT, when he,s older if he bites someone you could be in big trouble, its a dogs instinct to run after things that are running, he,s just doing what instinct tells him to do, this is where you must step in and put a stop to it, before he gets older and bigger
