My 11 week old GSP pup is doing an awful lot of poos. 3 or 4 first thing in the morning then another 3 or 4 spread throughout the day. Also he is straining after doing some of his poos. They are mainly solid but some a bit loose.
He was on Beta until we got him at 8 weeks old & has been on Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy since - with NO extras. He has actually lost interest in eating but will eventually eat correct quantity after I have soaked some or fed it using his toy ball or by hand. But he is not carrying any puppy flesh now, although he is growing & gaining weight.
He had Stronghold on his neck 14 June & Panacur in food for next 3 days.
I am now quite worried about him - is this normal for a GSP pup? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise trip to vet tomorrow & he hates the car still

Why did you change his food? Did you do it gradually or suddenly - it should be done very gently over a period of about 7 days or so. It sounds like he might not be getting on with the Euk and coupled with a new home and the panacur - his little system has had a lot to cope with in just three weeks.
Puppies do poo a lot anyway as long as they are not all very runny chances are he's OK - just not liking his new diet.

Thank you for your reply Pam.
I did change his food very gradually onto Eukanuba as I had been advised this was a better quality food.
I can just never remember any previous pups doing so many poos, but not had a GSP before. Also the straining - not all the time - mainly the morning ones, trying to get out 3 or 4 poos one after the other.

Hiya,
I take it the pup has been wormed?
If so....maybe the eukaneuba is not a good food for your particular pup? Was he/she doing well on Beta? If so, maybe gradually going back to that would be a good idea.
Different foods suit different dogs....it's difficult, but the only one i've ever found to suit my shepherds and my collies, and collie crosses, is called Dr John Gold...I don't think you can get get this everywhere though, and it's a working (adult) dog food.
But I do think it's worth a try with a different food, I'd really use Beta over Eukaneuba anyday, but I'm sure people will be along that say differently...as I said, it's different with diffrent dogs!!!
Good luck
Lisa

Hi, Eukanuba does not suit all dogs and it it very high in protein. I suggest you get his tummy right by changing onto a light diet for a week or so : boiled , de boned chicken and rice, I'm not sure of the amounts for this size of puppy but maybe a plump drumstick +1 1/2 mugs of cooked rice 3 tmes a day? You could replace the chicken with sardines or scrambled egg once aday , but dont vary the diet too much until his stomach is more settled - my puppies usually do a poo per meal or so. I would recommend to put him on a good quality puppy food for large breeds - but not a very high protein one. He will take a long time to grow and his growth musn't be hurried along with too high protein. Burns is an excellent one and I expect others will recommend some more.

I started to use Iams puppy on my last litter, but that upset their tummies, so switched to James Wellbeloved, that was wonderful, their tummies settled down within a day and they have all stayed on this now even in their new homes.

We took our GSP pup to the vets on 14.7.03 as I had seen some mucus in his poo, & he is now being treated for colitis.
After reading some of the other messages on the forum about colitis, I am wondering whether to feed Naturediet Puppy food when he is better, or Arden Grange Puppy which he had just changed to before we took him to the vets. He is currently eating the prescription food - Waltham Sensitivity Control - chicken & rice light diet for the next 2 days (it's absolutely wonderful to see him enjoying his food at last!), & then I have to put him gradually back onto a puppy food. Any advice would be really appreciated.
I am really worried that if he has had colitis for the last 5 weeks that he will not develop properly, as his food seemed to be going straight through him, so I would like to get him settled on the best possible food for him ASAP.
