Can anyone advice me please.... our 13 week old Dogue de Bordeaux often steals clothes and runs off down the garden. unfortuately she got the better of us yesterday by manageing to eat one of our childs socks, should we be concerned and take her to the vet or will nature take its course??? She doesnt seem to be in pain. Thanks

i would imagine it would pass naturally although you may end up having to pull it out if it gets stuck halfway - yuck i know! i have to do this sometimes which bits of string. oh the joys of puppies eh!!
i wouldn't worry too much but do keep an eye on her to make sure she isn't in any discomfort.

My siberian husky pup seems tp get hold of socks every dam day!! He vomits them up every morning its nothing to worry about.you just have to clean up the mess. Sometimes he does pass them through and i have to say it makes his poop very easy to pisk up he has nt got one stuck yet thankfully. Hope all goes well.

Sorry Woodle83 but I disagree, eating any foreign object is something to worry about. Particularly things like socks that are very difficult to see on x-rays. You've obviously been very lucky in that your dog vomits them back up!

When my dogs have eaten something soft like a sock and I know it is very recent, like within 30 minutes, I have given them soda crystals to make them sick & bring it back up. That way reducing the risk of it getting caught up in the intestines. Obviously if they have ever eaten something sharp like a plum/peach stone then I never make them sick as it could do more damage bringing it back up than allowing it to pass through.

Most of the time things do pass through. If I suspect they have eaten something they shouldn't and I can't or don't want to make them sick then I just watch them like a hawk and check their faeces to make sure it has definately been passed. I've known it take as long as a week to pass something. If it was something sharp then I would often feed them bread after the event to help bulk up and pad out their stomachs to help push through the object.

I would watch your DDB carefully and keep an eye out for the signs already mentioned by Lara that would indicate problems. Check her faeces and do what I do - keep the clothes basket under lock and key :D

Hi ya Claire I didn't mean to sound thoughtless but bandit still eats and drinks happily and he has not eaten anything sharp. I think with bandit he eats the whole sock which is quite large so it cant pass through so it has to come up. I did manage to keep socks away from him but my partner - being a bone idle man refuses to put them in the laundry basket!!!

Sorry Woodle83 I didn't think you sounded thoughtless :-) I just didn't want the original poster to think it was okay for dogs to eat foreign objects of any kind.

LOL at your partner though :D Think he must be related to my other half :p Oh he'll put them in the laundry basket but then forgets to shut the door to the room where the laundry basket is kept

She could bring it back up or it might just pass through. This could take a few days or even longer if food is managing to get passed it inside.
As long as she is eating and drinking then don't worry :) Signs to look out for is stopping eating and drinking and trying to vomit all the time as this means the sock has become a blockage and will need the vets help to remove it.

Mine loves eating tissues (with or without snot) and goes to extraordinary lengths to get them. He has recently eaten a wooden lolly stick which although caused me no end of worry, was passed out eventually and still intact. I thought his gastric juices would have helped to break it down, but nope - still in the same state it was when he swallowed it.....Then 2 days ago he must have eaten a j.cloth (from where I don't know) because I could see bits of it in his poo. When I mentioned it to my husband he said Oh yes, he'd vomited one out on the backdoor mat the other morning.

So now we're having to watch him like a hawk or he'll probably eat the curtains or the telly next!!!!!!!!!!!!

My boy ate a nail brush a couple of months ago, he did it very well, cos no one saw him steal it or eat it and there was no mess, so he must have eaten the whole thing!! Anyway, he hasnt eaten anything since! The state of that when it came out the other end was something else!! All I can say is i bet it hurt!! It looked like a baby hedgehog with white spines!!

Ouch!!
