Hi :O)

I was wondering if any one could share their experiences of the Wheaton Terrier with me? I looking to buy a new dog. I have always in the past owned springer spaniels, which I think are absolutely lovely dogs. However my new partner is allergic to dogs and I have heard that Wheaten Terriers are good for people with allergies. Does any one have any experince with this? Any comments would be highly appreciated. The Wheaten Terrier seems like a lovely terrier and I cant imagine a life without out a dog!!

Thanks so much.

Hi Louise
I used to have a SCWT and a friend has three (she used to have 5 !). They are VERY lively, bouncy dogs, very loving and affectionate and can be very vocal :D

Unfortunately the one we owned suffered from fear aggression and I know this has been a problem in the breed on and off over the years. Having said that, I think the majority are big softies :)

They have a single coat which matts very easily so daily grooming is fairly important. I had heard that they are suitable for people with allergies but can't speak from experience.

I would say that if you have the time, space and energy and you have owned a lively breed before, the Wheaten is a good choice. I would not, though, recommend it to anyone as a first dog.

Hi Joyce,

Thanks so much for your feedback.

A lively, bouncy, loving dogs suit me down to the ground. I have had owned a few large dogs, so I think a SCWT will be manageable. I have to say I was worried slightly about agression as Terriers are known to be rather difficult around other dogs. My friend has an Irish Terrier who is a lovely dog but if there are any other dogs around he has to be kept on the lead at all times as he is always looking to prove he is the toughest!!

However as you say SCWT are in general big softies and I have read they are the least agressive of all Terriers. I am hoping that if I socialise the puppy as much as possible he/she will not be too agressive around other dogs.

Have you had any experience with female SCWT? I have only ever owned dogs but because of the above mentioned Irish Terrrier!! I am going to have to get a bitch. However I am slightly apprehensive. In my limited experience with bitches they tend to be more moody and slightly difficult.

Thanks again
Louise

Hi again Louise

Our wheaten was a male so I have no first hand experience of bitches - apart from the four belonging to my friend. All hers are lovely dogs with good temperaments. I think early socialisation is definitely the key with this breed - putting the work in at the beginning is very important and you are obviously prepared to do this.

If you need any info about the breed club, I'll be happy to help.

Thanks again Joyce, your comments have really helped. I have also just read that the SCWT temperment varies very little between the sexes. I now have my heart set on a female SCWT. The last hurdle is to drag my boyfriend down to see the breeder and meet some of the dogs and see if his allergies react. My fingers are tightly crossed! :o)

Regards
Louise
