Topic Dog Boards / General / He eats bark, grass, weeds, mud....

....but will Ollie eat his worming tablet? No. Will he eat it sandwiched in choccy drops? No. Hidden behind a biscuit? Nope. Put in his weetabix with warm milk....errrr....no. So by now it's getting soggy and mushy and I'm crawling round on the floor picking up all the bits of it that he's spat out on his way! Grrrrr

Bless him, anyway he finally had it about 20 minutes later but I'm not sure if it all went down!

Anyway, to do with the subject of this post - Ollie is eating all of the mentioned, especially the bark. I've checked it's not the cocoa mulch, it doesn't smell of chocolate but he loves it! Is this ok? And eating grass and random weeds (my garden is in the process of being tidied)....is this ok too?

He seems fine, been a bit quiet today and he has a runny nose but I have been wondering if all this garden eating is good for him....?

The way they take tablets is:
Hold the dog firmly.
Open its mouth.
Put the tablet right to the very very back of the tongue.
Hold the mouth shut and stroke the throat.
With your third hand shove a piece of cheese into pup's mouth.
Pup will swallow!
Then give another titbit along with lots of praise.

Kneel on the floor and hold the pup between your knees with his back to you so he can't wriggle backwards and you can hold him firmly pinned in with your elbows then follow JG's advice :)

Sorry - only half an answer :o

I'd deter him from eating the bark - too much and it could cause a blockage. Grass is ok but be careful what weeds he's eating some of them can be poisonous.

Hi,
The way I got Dylan (4 1/2 month old Golden) to eat his worming tablets was to put margarine on the tablet, then wrap it in some ham. I got him to 'sit' and gave it him as his 'reward'. He wolfed it down and was looking for more :D
Dylan also got a taste for the decorative bark in my garden when I first brought him home. I was worried about him eating it and tried to stop him, but I think that just made it more appealing. He has pretty much grown out of it now, with no problems. Still has the occasional munch. He did, however, decide that it would be great fun to position his first excavation where the bark was. So now the bark is not where it was before
He also eats grass (especially newly cut clippings) and weeds. I'm trying to get him to recognise weeds and eat them on command :D :D
He tried soil one time, but came inside afterwards and brought the soil and his dinner back up onto the carpet (lovely!). Since then he hasn't touched soil. Must have learnt!

As Lara said, make sure that there is nothing poisonous he could be eating, then maybe try and distract him with something more exciting? Hopefully it will be a short phase and he'll be on to something else very soon!

Best wishes,

Sarah

Sarah,

Your pup sounds just like my two. :D

The Labrador breed will eat almost anything (except worming tablets ! ) they are notorious scavengers, my two will try and eat just about everything one of mine even ate a frog !! :) (chucked it up again pretty quick though !)

So it is all the more important that you are aware of what is poisonous to them and to make sure that such things are never within their reach.

Checkout this for a start:http://www.k9haven.org/poison_plant.html

Our pup would eat anything if it was squashed into a piece of Stilton or similar :)

Have you tried those Panacur Favourites? I've just wormed my pup this morning and she ate it no problems at all. It's quite a bit tablet and is the consistency and colour of beef schmakos.

This was D......D something. Can't remember now. I will maybe see if I can try Panacur next time - that is what the breeder had given him previously. I will also check out those links for poisonous stuff. Thank you all.

Yep, Drontal, that was it. Half a tablet.
