Topic Dog Boards / General / bull terriers??

hi everybody :)
just need some help concerning bull terriers. My brother's considering buying one but he's still in the process of researching. He has 2 cats would a bull terrier be okay with cats? someone would always be home (he has 2 housemates) so no problem with separation anxiety. he has a fairly big home and an average size yard. if anyone would be able to give any info (eg. exercise requirements, indoor/outdoor dog? compatibility with cats? etc etc) on the breed it would be much appreciated!

Hi Elise & Moogi,
Please Note:
Bull Terriers need very thoroughly socialized and trained, but are not recommended for most households. They are too energetic for small children. Can be sensitive to fleas or other parasites. Very dog-aggressive. Not very trustworthy with other pets as well. Cannot tolerate teasing. Very protective and willful; do not encourage this breed to be possessive or jealous. They may be aggressive with strangers. Needs very firm training and lots of exercise. Check puppies for deafness. Vigorous daily exercise needed. An excellent jogging companion. Fairly active indoors. A small yard is sufficient for this breed.
Regards.

Hi Priyanaker

Im sorry but I have to disagree on your comments on Bullys and cats. Ive never had a problem with bullys of any type with cats or other pets nor being too energetic for kids. I dont think they are aggressive to strangers either. I would say its down to teaching them what is acceptable and what is not.
Everything else you say I do agree with and would add that I wouldnt recomend them to inexperienced owners.

Thanks for the correction.
Ya, "I would say its down to teaching them what is acceptable and what is not." is the correct words for this breed. The teaching should be firm. Regarding relation with other pets, I think they will not be aggressive if they are grown up with other pets. At least my experience says so.

hi i have been a owner of a bullterrier for 9 yrs she was used for fighting by her 1st owner she passed way 6wks ago age 13. she was 4 when i bought her and her temperment was hellish but i knew she was for me and i know she senced that i was the owner for her . and before i purchased or even thought of buying a bully i read so many books asked people who have them ...i even took one for a walk with his owner to see if the breed was for me and watched the bully in he's own suroundings and to see a young 8mth male bull terrier being a little bugger was a eye opener ....go to your bookstores borders/waterstones and get them to get you some books.. as i'm going to buy another or even adopt i'm reading up on them again....i have 8 english bullterrier books....even ask your local vet about the breed....the more you know the better choice you will make.. to see if this breed is for you...good luck jayner
