I recently bought a japanese akita pup, she is now 8 months old.We are really pleased with her and only wanted her as a pet.She is a wonderful looking dog but only one ear has gone up,the other shows no signs of moving.Although we are not that bothered as we have no interest in showing or breeding her,is there any reason for this. The breeder we bought her off is still convinced the ear will go up. Has anybody any suggestions or ideas as to why this has happened or is it just one of those things?

I don't know about with Akita's but this occasionally happens with
Pharaoh Hounds around teething time. Some prick eared breeds
use 'stifning' felt stuck in the dogs ears to encourage them up after
teething.
Perhaps the ear muscles are weak and it may never go upright.
Also has she had her first season or been speyed ?

We have Akitas, the ears usually start to come up around 8 - 9 weeks old, starting at the base. I have 2 pups here now at 11 weeks, both have their ears nearly fully up. 'Drop' or 'broken ear' is a fault in Akitas. Again their ears can drop during teething. Has the ear ever been up at all ?. I am not an expert on the breed but can find out more for you if you want. email me if you would like me to find out more for you. Glad u enjoy your dog, we have Rotties as well but I was smitten when we got our first Akita.
regards Lorraine
