I have seen a post and somebody was advertising for a golden retriever puppy priced between £75 and £200. I'm no expert but i know realistically these dogs cost between £400 and £500. Just thought i would share my amazement.

I think a lot depends on the breeder, we bought our first ever ESS for only £40 and I remember at the time thinking something was not right but as the kids had fallen in love with the pup she came home with us, I have to say she was a brilliant dog and friend to everyone who met her, we couldnt have wished for a more faithful dog. At the time the breeder said he wasnt in it for the money just wanted his dogs to go to good working homes.

Could be stolen, could be homebreeder or puppy dealer!

I paid £250 for my ISDS BC in 1999. Then £300 for my show(ish) BC last year, and £400 for Ella my mini smooth Dachshund.
My dad got his "working" type E.S.S in 1995 for £100, and he's been the healthiest one of them all!

Freya a Tibetan spaniel was bought 7 years ago for £250, The first Lhasa I bought in 1979 was £200, a lot of money in them days." Tibetan Mastiff's I have not £500-600 they have gone down in price over the year my first one in 1986 cost £800 but that is what every breeder was charging then, The Newfoundlands £800, and the Dogue dE Bordeaux can cost £400 to £1500, but you mainly find that the cheap ones come from parents with no health checks, and the higher priced ones come from breeders that regularly compete abroad, and have won well, and have had all the health check done.Whatever the price of the dog the main thing must be that they are healthy and loved

I was asked to find a GSD pup for a woman I know.I took her to see a litter with all health checks done,KC reg,,Champion sired, well raised and out of a shown bitch that were for sale at £150 since she was having problems at home and needed to home them(they were 12 weeks). They were stunning!!! The woman decided she wanted something younger!! so bought a GSD from a dog down the road with no papers, health checks etc, all his litter mates have been rehomed or PTS due to poor temperament and at 12 months old he was diagnosed with HD

There's 2 blue Dane bitches for sale in our local freebie, for £600. Obviously they've started eating too much and the breeder wants rid!

I would be very careful about buying a dog that was cheap. You really have to be on the lookout for puppy dealers who sell on the dogs from puppy farms. Its amazing the stories they will come up with to assure you they are not from puppy farms.

Personally I would go to one of the breed clubs to find out who the breeders are and take their advice and would rather get a dog that is twice the price than perpetuate puppy farms.

The strange thing is, Frankie, that in my area, puppy farmers are selling sickly pups that bear little resemblance to their breed, for MORE money than if the families had gone to experienced breeders with health checked stock!! Mr & Mrs just see an advert in the local paper and have no idea about the way dogs should be bred! They think that "if it's got a pedigree, so it must be OK!!" They tell me that breeding dogs is only about putting a dog with a pedigree to a bitch and that's it.
Reading some of the posts on this board, that's not only happening in my area!! There are many people who have bought any old dog and bitch, then ask "When should I put them together?" Or "I'm looking for a stud" when the only stipulation is colour and distance!!
If only all buyers had your idea about how to buy a pedigree puppy, then the puppy farmers and ignorant backyard puppy producers would be out of the running!

My first Lab - a chocolate called Max cost me £25 (what the owner had paid out in food for him).

He had a pedigree as long as your arm, and was a superb dog in every way.

He is sadly missed, even by Christopher who was only 2 when we lost him, and who keeps asking when Maxie is coming back (makes me want to cry every time).

"He had a pedigree as long as your arm."
Julia please tell me what that means??
- By Julia [gb] Date 05.07.03 21:41 UTC
I mean he had a very good pedigree, with more than a few SH CH etc in it.

Had I been buying him from a breeder I would have expected to pay £4-500 for him.

I did have hope of having one of his puppies. Unfortunately he only had eyes for the duvet :O

I know the cost of the dog doesn't matter but i would rather pay the going rate in the hope that a had bought a healthy pet
