Topic Dog Boards / General / Puppy on ground before 2nd vaccinations?
- By sarahb_work [gb] Date 05.07.03 08:43 UTC
Hi,

It is my daughter's school fair today and I'd like to take Ollie to socialise him a bit more. I was going to carry him but then I wondered if would be ok to put him on the ground here and there for 5 minutes or so at a time (on the lead, which at the moment he just likes to chew). It would mainly be to give my arms a break! He had his first vaccination 5 days ago. I just wondered if a small time on the ground is ok or whether it is a definite no no...?

Thank you,

Sarah.

Hi Sarah,
It's not something I'd like to risk. You could be lucky and he'd be fine. But you might not. Best to stick with carrying him.

Bit of a risk Sarah. Puppies are born with a certain amount of immunity which they receive from the dam but gradualy that diminishes. By now the natural immunity is at the lowest and the effects of the injections has not yet kicked in. I always take my young puppies to dog club where i can sit on a chair with my puppy in my arms. People there know not to bring their dogs too close but it is a great start to socialising.

Regards, John

Thanks for both of your advice. I will carry him and hopefully find a chair somewhere!

Hi,
Apart from the potential risk to the pup, you might have a problem with a dog on the ground on school property! When I pick up my nephew from school my dogs are only allowed onto school property if being carried. What breed of pup is it - would you not be able to take a carry pouch of some sort to give your arm a break (if the pup is not too big) I got a 'pooch pouch" for puglet (she is 2 but only weighs 10lbs) it is great, she can come on dog walks with the rest of the bunch, but when her little legs get tired she pops into the pouch and has a breather while the other carry on running wild. Also means I can do bits and pieces, keeping her with me but not under other people feet! She even did the Great North Dog walk a couple of seeks ago - her own leg power for the start and finish, and "pouch mobility for the remaining 3miles:))

bye

Hi,

Ollie is a Golden Retriever, he's just 8 weeks old. I carried him in the end. He got so much fuss it was amazing, I always seemed to have a big crowd of people round me! Should have charged 20p a stroke :) That pooch pouch sounds cool but I don't think Ollie would fit in one! I've almost considered digging out my kids old buggy but he'd never stay in it! Roll on the next vaccination, I can't wait to be able to take him out. Had him on the lead 3 times today in the garden and he went nuts the first time, bucking like anything and rolling over like a mad thing! Was a lot better by the third time though, helped along by the odd choccy drop :)

Gwen

Is your pooch pouch something you can buy, or something you designed yourself? It would be really useful when I (finally) get my puppy, so he can come along on all the walks for the socialising.

Many thanks

Hayley
