Topic Dog Boards / General / Puppy from Abroad

Hi, does anyone have any infor or experience with having a puppy from abroad? What happens with the pup while they are in transit? Are they left alone the whole time? If i had two would they be kept together? How do i pay for the pup? Cause obviously i dont want to be ripped off, i dont want to part with the money only to pick up and empty crate or the pup not be what i asked for? but obviously the people i am buying from, arent going to part with the puppy until they have the money, what do i do?

Any info asap please?

Thanks

Gemma

If you are able I'd go and see them first and then decide. It's a lot for a dog to through and then for you to decide that they're not what you wanted.

Good luck. What breed are you thinking of importing?

Are you putting it through quarantine or pet passport?

Where are you getting it from and how old is it? as it has to be 14 weeks to fly if going into quarantine and 10 months old before it can come in on pet passport.

Thanks for the reply. I think it will be quarantine as its only 8 weeks old at the moment, but it takes a while to sort the formalities out. Unfortunately i'm not able to go and see it first as its from the ukraine.

How long is it in quarantine for? and how much is it likely to cost?

The reason i'm getting her from abroad is because she's 2/3rd cheaper.

My main concern is the pups well being and not being ripped off! What is there to stop the breeder receiving my money and not putting the puppy on the plane?

Thanks

Hi Gemma,
Last I heard, animals stayed in quarantine for 6 months, and it costs roughly £2000.

Quaruntine is 6 months. The pet passport MUST be carried out exactly to the same as ours that means you have to explain to them and they explain to their own vet what exactly MUST be done to the letter, many dogs taken to europe by UK people and which have been to UK vets before they went have had one simple thing wrong in the passport and ended up stuck in France.
Personaly I would not touch a dog from that part of the world unless I knew people who had had a dog from that breeder personaly and could vouch for them.

sorry to say it..but getting a puppy shipped from ukraine and then putting it into quarantine just for the sake of saving money (which seems unlikely) when its only a baby seems rather cruel to me...buying a puppy shouldn't be about saving money! its going to be a member of your family for an awfully long time and is going to cost you a fair bit of money in the long run!!

Hi everyone,

Just a point to bear in mind, quarantine would be the only option here, as Pet Passports do not apply to dogs from the Ukraine.

bye

I've obvioulsy been very naive, i didnt think there would be all this hassle, i just thought it would be a short trip on the plane, and the last thing i wanted was to be cruel to the pup.
