Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Lab's "girly probs"...

Kt is a 5 year old black lab. Over the last few weeks she has developed a red angry spot right at the bottom of her "under carriage" in correspondence of the spot where her "pointy bit" would touch the skin when she lies down. This has never happened before. I wonder if anybody has come across this one before and whether you can make any recommendations as to ointments or other natural remedies. I tried bathing in luke warm salty water and it seemed to make it slightly worse if anything...
(Better go now before KT sees me talking about her private parts to a wide audience which includes men....!....).
TIA

They do get very embarrassed when you talk about their bits to strangers  :D !
It sounds although she may have an infected spot. If it is bothering her and she seems to be licking hersself alot more I would go and see a vet and get it checked as she may needs some antibiotics to get rid of it and just to rule out that is is anything else . Otherwise a bit of germoline may help.

Hi everybody!
Thanks to every single one of you!!! Every one of your replies made me smile and I shall try both ointments suggested (germoline and sudocream).
With regards to it being a spot.... Nah!... Have been through the pleasure of squeezing a doggy spot and therefore know exactly what one of those looks like. That is... after I had cried for 3 days and then visited the vet (convinced that the worse news was about to hit me) only to watch her take great pleasure in squeezing a loooooooooooooooong white wormy thing out of KT's chassis!
Fortunate as I was in being able to experience such pleasure (repeatedly I might add.... as the spot reformed regularly for a couple of weeks) I am sure it was nowhere as fun as getting the tick out Timb!
Thanks again
a) for your help, and
b) for not shooting me down in flames (I only realized after I clicked "post" that I had posted in the behaviour forum as opposed to a medical one).
Cheers!

Got nothing useful to add, but I did want to say I loved the way you phrased this - it did make me chuckle

You want to try and remove a tick from your lab's girly bits! That is not fun!

Least of all for her, Timb

If it is a tick then alcohol will often encourage them to remove their heads (Not my malt tho!) Surgical Spirit usually works. I've also heard of people having success using nail varnish remover (Not that I've tried that you understand :p)

Regards, John

PS. never be embarrassed about calling a dog's bits by their correct name, it is so much less likely to lead to confusion and nothing to be worry about. All our dogs have these bits. :)

Hi John

I've heard that smothering ticks with vaseline makes them easier to remove. Would that make any sense.?

Thankfully not had to do it yet, but just in case!!! :(

Apparently it smothers them - they can't breathe so the let go of their grip

Disgusting creatures - burn them!!!

Far more interesting to get 'em drunk! They get like me then and fall off their perch

John

The one and only( is it louse or lice ??) I have ever had to deal with in 16 years ( I am lucky and the girls !) we used vodka ! As you say we had a great time watching the thing as we consumed a lot of the vodka whilst doing this !! Hic !! :D

But John, do you wave your arms about in the same fashion when you've fallen off?? :D

Lucy, I always used to use Vodka, but decided it was better in me, and got a tick remover!!

People have said that I wave my arms and legs about whilst lying on by back after having a medicinal malt. I really can’t believe it though!
