Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Dew Claw Bleeding HELP
- By guest [gb] Date 03.07.03 08:27 UTC
Hello please help I have just cut my dogs dew claws with proper nail clippers. The first one cut perfectly but as I closed the clippers on the second he pulled away from me and it has taken away more than it should have. Now it is bleeding quite a lot its dripping out! I have held a clean clothe on it for a couple of minutes and it clotted but as soon as he licks it or moves it starts again if I put a bandage round it he will chew it off, please help what can I do?

I would phone my vet and ask for advice over the phone. Sometimes pressing an icecube against the nail will help. There are styptic pencils you can buy specially for this; or alum crystals or potassium permangenate are both good, but that doesn't really help now!
:)

Edit: Or is it Permangenate of Potash? Or are they the same thing? Is there a chemist in the house?
:)

I'm sure i read that self raising flour has something in that will stop the bleeding in an emergancy -try that

Not SR flour - but cornflour.

HI, in fact, any flour acts as a coagulant in an emergency if nothing else to hand.

bye
