Ok a while back I posted regarding my puppy that has Demodex. Sadly we are still fighting the little critters :( However with the product I am using I had to body clip my pup. Once the hair was off I was able to see how black her skin is. It goes way beyond any normal pigmentation. So my questions are,.. Is the hyperpigmentation caused by the Demodex? Will it ever go away? Will it stop the hair from growing back? She has NO hot spots, No red inflamed skin, No weaping, or oozing on the skin. To be more specific her skin almost looks like elephant skin on about 80% of her body. Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated! Ty,.. Icy

Demodex infection can usually results in a mild erythema (redness of the skin) and may develop into some form of alopecia(hair loss, but not normally assosciated with mange). Pruritus (which is the sympton of itching, a prominant feature of skin diseases etc) may or may not be present. These are often seen on the face, and usually there is spontaneous recovery within 6-8 weeks. Often on the dogs you see chronic dermatitis with crusting, scaling and hyperpigmentation. There may be intense pruritus and a secondary pyoderma but you said that your dog hasnt shown any signs that this may have occured.
I wouldnt be worried as this is normal of a nasty condition such as this, and it wont be permenant but it will take a long time to clear up. Hair often grows back but in a thin patchy way. It sounds horrible but it does get better ( I have seen some dogs where it hasnt completely cleared up, but it doesnt irritate or upset the dog in any way).
To be honest, without seeing her, it would be very hard to assess her, but the elephant skin you described is pretty common.
At the vet where I worked, we had a black lab who had such advanced stages of demodex that we thought he wasnt going to make it. In fact, he came back every week and was worse and worse...then, suddenly, after ages of treatment, he cleared up, and his nasty skin slowly sorted itself out. Skin is very clever and it will clear up...just give it time (and give her lots of love, demodex is a horrid thing to have)

I have never had this problem but my mum did for a very long time with a westie, the only thing that ever helped was Betnovate scalp lotion that is used for humans, we only found out by chance because my mum was prescibed it by the doctor for herself for a skin condition.

Ty to all who replied :) After 2wks on the Nu-Stock she recieved her first negative skin scrape!! She is now on Ivermec daily until 2 more negative scrapes are found. As for her skin,.. she is peeling (almost like a sunburn would). She gets soaked in vinegar water every couple days and then bathed, and it is doing wonders! We have concluded that the sulfer in the Nu-Stock and the direct sun light is what has caused the extreme black skin (which is already peeling away). So it looks like the black skin was nothing to worry about :) Anyway ty to all who posted! Ty Icy
