Hi I am very new at this. I have 2 yorkies 1 male 2yrs old and 1 female 1 1/2yrs old. I think she may have gotten pregnant but I don't know how to ask or WHO. Here it goes... They got "stuck together" each time they got together. My female is 8 lbs and the male is 4.6 lbs. He is a little short in height and when he would actually "enter" she would decise it is time to walk around and he would be "drug" around the living room. I would then hold her still and let him finish but how do I know if the sperm was released and he wasn't just hurt and couldn't release. I know I can wait 30 days or so but how do I know if they are going to need more help?

Hiya
I am a little confused as to why you didnt get the male castrated and/the female spayed. I take it you planned to breed??? I hope you dont take this the wrong way, but as has ben posted many times before...have you done any research? Breeding is a HUGE decision to make and although I am sure your dogs are wonderful and you love them to bits, are they "breeding" material? People are very specific about who they buy pups from (or should be) and it should never be taken lightly.
It sounds as though you maybe didnt do enough research before embarking upon this.
sorry..
(but good luck if she is pregnant.)

Hi it does sound as if they tied which is what can usually happen during a normal successful mating.I would get hold of a copy of The Book Of The Bitch as quickly as possible and read it through properly.

If they got "stuck together" then yes, they have almost certainly mated and you will probably be expecting puppies.

I am sure you will be interested to hear that now it gets much harder for you, and you should certainly take a lot more responsibility than you have done so far.

I suggest you get The Book of the Bitch right NOW, see your vet, and try and get a sympathetic yorkie breeder to give you some advice. Breeding is not just "putting two dogs together and seeing what happens". You could have damaged both your dog and bitch in the process, not to mention the puppies. Please please, start to take this more seriously, if you don't, you could easily end up with a dead bitch.

Hi Chloe, I am interested in breeding but am new to it. just wondered why she could end up with a "dead bitch"? Also just wanted to say good luck with bitch and puppies, hope all goes well. Louise.

Hi Louise,
Just like with humans having babies, having a litter is risky for the mother as well as the pups. Things can, and do, go wrong. :(

I can think of at least three people in my breed who have lost a bitch during or after a caesarian in the last 3 or 4 years. One of the three bitches should never have been bred from (it was in fact sold with an agreement that it wasn't bred from but the new owner reneged on the agreement) but the other two were in the best of condition and extremely fit. Sadly it is possible to lose a bitch whilst breeding from her.

Hi Louise - I've seen you have been asking about breeding, so here, for what its worth is my advice to you :)

The thing to do with breeding, in my opinion, is to explain when you buy a puppy that you will be interested in breeding from the pup in the future. At least then the breeder can decide whether she thinks you are a good person to do this, and will insist on you getting a good enough quality bitch in the first place. She will then guide you through choosing the right dog to compliment her lines, and, she will be the best person to get you and your bitch infront of that stud owner. If he is a very sought after stud, or the owners are very choosy who they put him with they will want to know that you are not going to muddy their dogs reputation in the future, and that you are a responsible potential breeder.

Your breeder will then guide you through what is a VERY traumatic time...is she pregnant, when are the puppies coming, what do i need, why isn't she eating etc etc and they will be there for you throughout... And when the whelping starts she will either be there or on the end of the phone, because believe me, its terrifying. You can easily easily end up with a dead bitch/and/or puppies if you don't recognise the signs that something is going wrong and act fast enough. Your breeder will then be there for you through the raising and weaning...and, if she's a member of the breed club (as you should be before embarking) she will help you find GOOD homes for your pups, without having to advertise.

Personally, if I was looking at getting a potential bitch, with the possibility of having a litter off her in the future, I would find a breeder who I knew I would stay in touch with, and be friends with :)

HTH
Chloe :)

Hi, I was hoping for some advice about my staffordshire bull terrier dogs. I have one bitch and one male. The bitch which I own is from a rescue home and when we first got her she had a womb infection, which meant she had to have her womb taken out. This wasn't a problem when the male staff we have was puppy but now he is getting older and wants to mate with the bitch. This causes a lot of fights and worries me.
I am also concerned that if I try to breed the male with a different female, then the female will turn on him and above all else I just want them to live in the same house with out fighting.

Hi, how old is your male staffy? This may well be something he grows out of if he is still young. At least with your bitch being spayed there is no chance she will get pregnant, even if she did allow him to mate her, which is very unlikely. I certainly wouldn't allow him to mate with another bitch because unless he was going to be used regularly it could permanently change his nature and make him very difficult to live with. You may have to consider having your male castrated to try to keep the peace.
