Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / bringing dog to work? Advice please....!
- By guest [gb] Date 02.07.03 17:46 UTC
Hi everyone!
I have grown up in a dog-mad family and am now adopting a greyhound in the next 3 months or so, after me and my partner have moved house.
I am applying for jobs in the new area at the moment.
Could anyone please help me with any advice on how to approach the subject of bringing your dog to work with a new employer??? Anyone out there who have done this so early in their contract? I am totally devoted to dogs, and I will not take a job where I can't bring my future baby! ; )

Any help and guidance would be very much appreciated!

Thanks!

Best thing to do is to ask them what there feelings are on the subject, i work in kennels and when i got the job i asked if i could bring the dogs with me, they stay in the car and i walk them on regular occasions out in the woods as i work 12 hour shifts and it would be to long for me to leave them at home.

I took mine to work and left them in the car (nice shady spot). It wasn't long before the bosses felt sorry for them and let them in. That was nine years ago, I still have the same job and bosses, different dogs unfortunately, but they are still very welcome and fortunately well behaved. It has been a nerve racking time each time I have got a puppy as to whether they would settle and behave, thank heavens for crates in the early months.

What work do you do though ?
It would be lovely to be with my dog allday but unfortunately there is no way i could take him.
Bring up the subject via Bring your Dog to Work day which is sometime in September I think ???? Anyone know ? i'm sure it is ;) . You could guage their reaction from that .

Bring your dog to work day, is normally around the 17th of September.
I brought one of my dog's into work last year, it was a great day.
I work as a library assistant at a University, it was quite quiet as it was still holiday time, but Chester one of my bullmastiffs really enjoyed his day, and the student and staff that were around made a great fuss of him.
I am hoping to do the same this year with one of my other bullies, so they all get a turn.

I suggested that at my work and they all just laughed their heads off

Thanks everybody for your advice!
It's great to hear about people out there who are actually able to bring their darling(s) to work!
- Rachael, what work do you do since they all laughed??

In the long run I am looking to do more volunteer work in kennels - I am currently walking lovely dogs at a greyhound rescue kennel. I want to train as a behaviourist, and will just be looking to work part-time in a shop or office until I have sorted myself out.
Alternatively, I would love to work in an admin/reception capacity at a vet's office.

All of these shouldn't present too many problems in the way of bringing my future dog to work... I hope....! Especially as it will be a greyhound who will just sleep all day! LOL : )

The car idea seems good - after all I don't smoke & could use my equivalent break time to go out to him/her & really lay the guilt on my future boss! Just one hitch... I don't have my licence yet... : (
