I have received a disturbing e-mail and I wonder if any of you can confirm this. Apparantly in the US (Alabama I think) they are pushing a bill through so anyone can legally euthanise an ex racing Greyhound, can this be true, can anyone shed any light on it?

Dont know if it is true but nothing would surprise after seeing a documentary about Greyhounds in the States. Many states I believe have banned Greyhound racing because of the fate of those dogs who finished racing. They found mass graves on rubbish dumps. One of the most sick was greyhound carcases being used as shark bait. Then of course there is good old vivesection still going strong both in the States and here in England unfortunately. It really makes you weep. Jan

Jan,
I believe much the same goes on with hounds and terriers used for hunting in the UK. Greyhounds and hunting dogs are treated by some as objects, at best as livestock. Old ones and those that do not perform are culled. It's what happens when animals become part of a business or industry.

I have on several occasions rescued labradors about to be shot by their owners as being surplus to requirements its a cheap way of some gundog kennels to get rid of old or unwanted dogs and this is UK !
Whilst not condoning shooting dogs its quick and saves suffering and is preferable to horrific proceedures in other countries, theres an awful lot goes on which is unbearable to think of. one particular bitch due to be shot was just five years old

As the others have already said, there is unfortunatly plenty of cruelty on our own doorstep, particularly with Greyhounds and Lurchers - the rescues can tell you many a horror story.
The report you mentioned appears in full on one of the Greyhound forums, and does appear to be true. There is a contact to voice you objection, for the good it will do:(
If you wish to see the report, or try to object, please mail me and I will give you the link.

Not forgetting like Mattie says, plenty of cruelty to Labradors too.

Thanks Lynda, I have seen that report now. It is common knowledge that dogs here are shot, dogs from puppy farms being quite high up on the list. It was the fact that they were giving lethal injections that disturbed me, these should be done by people who KNOW what they are doing.

very true Dawn I agree its certainly a skilled job to do the job right some would cut corners :(
I used to worry a lot before one of our local stray kennel owners retired he used to put the dogs down and he wasnt particularly dog freindly I worried myself silly over that.
Plus its quite worrying that a layman could have such lethal stuff in his possession

I've actualy seen this first hand , culling of dogs that is.
We were in spain and out walking when we came across a tree , from the tree 7 dogs were hanging by there neck and by the look of it they had been there for sevrel days, it is a big thing in spain so i was told that at the end of the hunting season the dogs that don't perform as well as they should are either hung or tied up in the mountians to die.
Being an eye for an eye person myself , i would quite happly and without regret hang the people that did this personally.
Then i saw i program on it and there is a couple that rescue these dogs and ship them all over the world to new homes.
It was for to late for the ones i saw, a vision that will stay with me forever.
