In my search for a golden retriever puppy i am still undecided on which sex to go for! Can anyone brief me on the bitches seasons how long do they last? what symptoms do they get? do they suffer anything similar to pmt?etc.

Hi, A bitch's seasons last for an average of 21 days, roughly twice a year. She won't be fertile for all of that time, but you can't take any chances and she needs to be kept away from male dogs for the entire period. Some bitches get a form of PMT, others don't (much like people, really!), and most will get a phantom pregnency to a certain degree after the season....some hardly notice, some poor bitches go through hell.
Hope this helps.

Yes it does help thankyou, poor dogs 21 days is a long time, i'm assuming they don't bleed for the whole of this time, do you by any chance know what happens during the 21 days?

Again, the amount of bleeding varies from bitch to bitch. Some bleed less and keep themselves cleaner than others - some can't be bothered and drip all over the place! With some the discharge becomes pale and straw-coloured in the second half of the season (and is often used as a sign that the bitch has entered her fertile time) but mine never have, and we have successfully had litters from them. You just can't predict how a bitch will be.
