Topic Dog Boards / Showing / The "stand"

Hi folks,

I'm trying to get my Weimaraner aged 7 and a half months ready for his first show on July 30th. I have been taking him to ringcraft, and he can "stand" if it suits him. But more often than not, I can place his front feet while holding his head, and thats OK. He stands with his front feet vertical. But as soon as I place his back legs, he seems to lean slightly backwards so that his front feet are at a slight angle and not vertical. I have tried walking him into it, but it makes no difference. Anyone know of a cure ? or indeed is this a fault that a judge would mark him down on at all ?

Thanks
Dave

Isn't it just typical......just when I ask for advice on how to stand him, I get home from work, take him in the garden, and he stood really lovely. Now all I have to do is to find out what I did different. Think I'll have to be a dog phsycologist !!!!

Wonder if he'll do the same again today.....fingers crossed !!

Hi Dave, My 18 month old weim bitch does exactly the same. I was told to push on her tail to push her forward but this didnt work for me. BUT... if I pull on her tail (gently not a hard pull) with just enough pressure for her to feel me pulling she pulls against it and stands ok.

Good Luck with the show..... where is it by the way??

Hi Lynn,

The show is at the Newark & Notts Showground on Wednesday, July 30th.,( Doncaster CS ) but I've sent off an entry to the Bridgford CS this morning at the same venue but on the 23rd July, a week earlier, as I found yesterday that they are still taking entries.

Fingers crossed !!

Could you possibly be putting his back legs too far back?? The further back they are, the more likely the dog is too rock on the front feet?? Try stacking him again, but with his feet not so far back!

To be honest Vicky if anything after going to a show yesterday and watching other Weims, I'm not putting them far back enough, so I don't think thats the answer. Still, thanks for the Weim site.

Just out of curiosity - what makes a stand a good stand? I've never really understood it!
