Karen
I dont know about Basset Hounds but do bear in mind when you come to choose any breed -
the breed characteristics ,temperament , your lifestyle , ( do you work ? how long will the dog be on his/her own for ? do you take lots of holidays etc etc )the amount of walks the dog will need throughout the day and their energy levels ,fussiness with regard to feeding and any health problems the particular breed may have .
If you do your homework beforehand and speak to people who have the breed you shouldnt go wrong .
Good luck :D

Hi Karen,
I don't know much about Bassets....apparently they have excellent temperaments (obviously when handled correctly!!)
A friend of mine from a long time ago, bred and showed them, and from what I can remember, they were lovely....and enjoyed snuggling up next to the fire with their owners!!
I have to say though, listen to what Lel said, it's good advice.
Whatever breed you go for....do a lot of research beforehand. You sound very caring, and I'm sure you'll understand, that there are a lot of dogs in rescue centres, because their 'owners' haven't researched the breed properly.
Hope everything goes well for you, and you find your perfect dog!!
Take care, good luck

Only had limited experience of bassets but all said and done they are a 'hound'.They can be stubborn and are not the easiest dog to train. They can also be noisy.
I would suggest you phone a respectable breeder or the breed society and ask advice.

Hi
I have a Basset Hound and you have to be prepared for a very stubborn hard to train hound, they are very loving but hate to be left alone for long and they are very vocal if they are at all distressed.
They tend to throw back their heads and howl this is so noisy,so you would have to tell all your neighbours that you are not murdering the Basset Hound, even though that is what it sounds like (: .
They also mature later than other dogs they can be a bit wimpish.
Having said all this I would not change my Basset called Dexter for anything, they also like digging up your garden, flowers and lawn.
I will say this they do need a lot of patience and understanding but are very loyal and loving and good with children, but if you have small children you have to remember that they are a short type of dog but large in body and very very strong so could push over a child in play, dogs can weigh anything upto 70lbs.
And they do like their food.
I hope that this hasn't put you off but it is something any Basset to be owener should be aware of.
Regards
Carol
