Topic Dog Boards / General / smooth collies?
- By snarfer [au] Date 29.06.03 09:22 UTC
hey, i've been considering getting a smooth collie for awhile i'm just not 100% sure if it would be suitable. i have an average size yard but i will be moving in a couple of months to a home with a large yard. i would prefer the dog to live inside but play outside. would a long walk/ jog and play time at a park daily be enough for a smooth collie (and training of course)? and how strong is their doggy odour? do they shed TONS? any information/ tips from owners would be great, thanks :)

Hiya
I don't know anything about Smooth Collies (although I've seen several do agility!) but what I'd say is you'd probably be better off waiting until after you've moved house before you get it as it'd be much less stressful for the dog. Are you saying it would only get one walk a day? I would think most dogs would benefit from stretching their legs properly at least twice a day, if not more.

I don't have a smooth collie, but have read they are more active than their rough-coated counterparts and so I think at least two good walks a day would be required. They also seem to excel at agility and so perhaps you could consider this too. Are there any breeders listed on here? Perhaps you could email them for advice? But as has already been said, I would wait until you move before introducing a puppy into your family.
