Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Companion dog show!

Hi all...

Well, I'm really chuffed today!!

This might sound stupid, but we started showing late last year, at open shows (not been to champ level yet!!)
Anyway, our dog, Toro, GSD, is lovely, but everythime we go to a show, he acts like an idiot...growling at other dogs, hackles up....you know what I mean!!
However, he's placed 1st 2nd and 3rd at every show we've been to so far.
Hubby and I were getting fed up with his behaviour though....we were thinking about giving up showing with him and keeping him as a pet.
We took him to a companion dog show (exemption show) today, to see what he was like, and he performed so well we just can't believe it!!
If I didn't know better I'd say he was a different dog!!! I wish I knew what we'd done differently with him...or what he was thinking....it's so strange.
Anyway, he didn't place....but I really don't give a damn!!! His behaviour was exceptional, and I'm so proud of him!

Just wanted to tell everybody!!

Take care

Lisa

Could it be that both You and Torro were more relaxed at this show? I think these days we are too eager to get to dog shows that we miss out on the fun aspect of dog showing these small shows are a great grounding for dogs as they are not expected to do do much too soon and therefore feel more relaxed.

I was just about to say the same thing as Mattie, it is very probably that you were more relaxed, this was for fun and you didn't have any expectations of his behaviour or performance.

Try at the next Open show you take him to, to just act as though it's a boring old fun show:) Try not to get nervous. Try not to worry about what he might be like. All of that tension goes straight down the lead. Just go intending to have fun whatever happens:)

Congrats - you must feel very proud of your boy today!

We are going to see a new house at Authorp, Between Louth and Mabelthorp, would anyone know of a ringcraft class in that area, as kujoe is 3 month old nearly, and would be desparate to start him straight away
