Pyo = pyometritis (also known as pyometra): inflammation and infection of the uterus. Can be closed (very very dangerous) or open (only very dangerous).

Hiya
No, a pyo is not contagious. It happens to un-spayed bitches and basically their uterus fills with pus and has to be operated on to remove it.

I wouldn't have thought Pyo would have been the cause for your bitch losing the pups.

Pyo is nasty. I'm sure you'd be able to tell if your bitch had it.
Has she been showing any signs of illness?? If so, get her straight to the vet.
Maybe it would be worth taking her for a check up anyway?

Hope she's ok,

Lisa

hi guys.........pyo doesn't alway have a bad odor....it can be treated with lutalyse and baytril....i have a bitch that had an open pyo and was treated.but usually spay is the treatment

A treatment for Open Pyo is Prostaglandin injections. This causes all the soft muscles ie the womb, stomach to contract. As the uterus contracts it expels the "pus". It will also make the bitch sick as the stomach too contracts but sickness is far better than major surgery by spaying. As well as the prostaglandin the vet will give a strong anti-biotic. In our case it was Marbocyl. It is also recommended to breed the bitch at her next season to reduce the risk of the pyo returning.
If a bitch gets pyo after having pups then it can mean she will need to be bred on consecutive seasons BUT vets and the KC are aware of this. Sometimes flack can be given by other breeders who know no better and just see 2 litters within 12 months :-( They can be quick to judge without bothering to find out the facts, but your bitch is the one that is important not them!
I did a link to an article on this treatment - well admin did it for me :-) Maybe they can add it here somewhere or you can do a search on "pyometria" on here.
Sometimes vets are too quick to recommend a spay. On closed pyo though spay is the only option :-(

Hi all....another question on Pyo..

I hear of so many bitches dying of this.

If you catch it early enough, is it relatively easy to treat...either way...spaying or drugs?

It's a worry for me...I have 2 unspayed bitches here at the moment, one with pups, so Pyo, is something I always have in my mind!

Thanks all

Lisa (the worrier!!)

If Pyo is going to occur it is usually (though NOT always) after a season or a litter of pups.
My bitch got it when her pups wer 3 weeks old so due to the drugs she had to treat her the pups had to be weaned overnight.
Usually the symptoms in the early stages can be noticable.
If it is an Open Pyo and caught early then the prostaglandin and marboycil treatment are very effective. If a bitch receives this treatment then it is recommended to have a litter next season.
Closed pyo the only option is to spay.
If a person has no intention of ever breeding the bitch then I would still recommend the treatment for any pyo as spaying as it can re-occur.
Luckily my bitch that had it in 2000 has not had it again and has gone on to have further litters of pups with no problems.
