Topic Dog Boards / Health / season injection?!
- By madstaffys [gb] Date 27.06.03 21:06 UTC
Hi, can anyone help me my staffy bitch is due to come into her first season soon, and a friend told me that there is an injection the vet can give her to stop her coming into season and make her less attractive to males or something along those lines, is this true? , please can someone shed a bit more info?

thanx

ps also I noticed there were a few staffy owners on here and I was wondering what age does a staffy bitch normally come into season?

Hi, there is certainly an injection that the vet can give that'll stop a bitch coming into season. However many vets will only give this as an emergency measure because its use is thought to be linked with a higher incidence of pyometra afterwards. How old is your bitch? She is likely to come into season anytime from about 6 months onwards.
:)

I would never use the injections - they can cause more problems than they solve. If you dont want the bother of seasons why on earth did you get a bitch? I suggest you let her have her first season and then have her spayed about 3 months later.

my staffy is 6 months old, westie lover dont suggest to me to have her spayed thats up to me, I was only asking about this injection because I had never heard of it before untill my friend told me about it. I am planning on showing her as she has a brilliant pedigree and temprement and maybe breeding from her. I have always had male staffies , this is my first staffy bitch and I was just asking for some info , no need to be so bloody rude!!

I don't think Westie Lover was being rude, its just that anyone who has been breeding and showing for a long time would never consider this injection.

I'll give you an example, a few years ago a friend of mine had a bitch and because she was winning well decided to go for the injections in order to carry on showing her, she was made up to a champion. Then he decided to breed from her, what a joke, first litter two pups, neither made it they were so small. Second litter one puppy born dead and last litter he managed 3 pups from her.

Giving this injection IMO upsets the hormonal balance and can cause dreadful problems as above or pyometra. She will still come into season again but her cycle will be changed and you may never have a regular bitch.

Just do what all of us have to do if you want to show and breed her, put up with the seasons!!!

Or bite the bullett and have her spayed.

Hi, I appoligise it was me that was being rude, all I was doing was asking about this injection as I had never heard or known anything about it, I wouldnt use it anyway as I didnt know it was so dangerous to the bitch, I am not really bothered about her coming into season, I only wanted to know what this injection was! ,is it wrong to ask questions?

Good for you, it takes a lot of guts to apologise. :-D :-D

No not wrong to ask questions, hope we have answered you and helped you.

Best of luck when you show her :-)

Apologies if I was a bit brisk, I am usually more tolerant!! No offence taken or intended. :-) Good luck with your bitch.

Hiya,

There is an injection, but it's always best to leave these things up to nature, and keep your bitch confined.
I have to do it with 3 unspayed bitches and 2 uncastrated dogs.....so I know it's difficult, but it can be done!!!!

and also...please understand, that the 'regulars' here have the dogs best interest at heart...they're not trying to be nasty!!

Take care

Lisa
