For those who can remember a couple of months ago I started a topic about my dog and the crucia ligament misdiagnosis he recieved from my vets. Well, last week I was getting ready to take all the dogs out and, as normal, "Dax" was jumping about. Just as I was about to put his lead on I heard a loud "whip" like crack, and he yelled like mad. He was taken to the vets where an exray showed he had broken his hock (the same leg as the other injury) so bad that nothing could be done for him. I was at work at the time so I asked the vets to keep him sedated until I could get there. The exrays looked terrible, the joint had actually disintegrated, there were splinters all over the place. I held him with he was put down. The last thing he did was to lift his head and wag his tail, just one more time. Its strange, but it was if he knew what was happening and he wasn't at all afraid. I miss him terribly, he was only 18 months old, hardly out of being a puppy. It realy hit home when I realised it was a year to the day I got him, when he was put down. I'm convinced there was some underlying problem that contributed to the hock breaking like it did, more likly than not, linked to the earlier injury. I wish now I had insisted on an exray the first time I took him. Its a terrible, terrible story of such a short life. The only small crumb of comfort is he is at peace now, God bless you "Dax." It was a privalige to know you.

So sorry for you. :( What a terrible thing to happen. Thinking of you.

This is very sad and the decision was yours. Did the vet suggest removing the leg or was there some reason this was not possible.

So sorry to hear about your loss, I hope god blesses you and your family and keeps you safely in the palm of his hand. Losing our beloved pets is such a hard thing to go through. Every time I read about it, it always brings back feelings about my own losses through the years. On the other hand lucky me and lucky you to have a dog that will always be remembered. Not all pet owners understand the bond that lays between the owner and their pet. Pet seems like such a understated word doesn't it.
Best thought to you

I'm so sorry to hear your news David. Personally I would doubt that there is any link with the earlier injury because of the timescale but really thats academic now. It's so hard to loose a dog at any time. It's something we all have to go through but it never gets easy. All we can do for our dogs is our best and if we have done that then we have nothing to reproach ourselves about.
Regards, John

I wrote this for one of mine I think it says it all about what we feel for our dogs :
Is Your Heart
Do you think you Heart is big enough
To store the love he gives
This lovely Pup you’ve just acquired
In the short time that he lives
Do you think your Heart is wide enough
To store up all the pride
Of this handsome dog, all grown up
As he walks out by your side
And will you Heart be strong enough
To cope with all the pain
When the time has come to say goodbye
You cant see him again
Well when my Hearts no longer strong
And My Life comes to an end
There will be a celebration
‘Cause I’ll see my friend again
As I take my walk down Heavenly Shores
I know that I will see
That familiar face, that wagging tail
Waiting There for me

Mattie that is a lovely poem it's made me cry but it's lovely, Jackie
So sorry to hear this terrible news. Losing a beloved dog is devastating at any time but somehow it always feels worse when they're so young.
Just hoping that the pain lessens for you day by day.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words.
He was a pain at times, running around the garden like a mad march hare causing bald patches on the lawn, weeing on the cherry blossom tree and leaving an amber coloured patch at the base of the trunk, trampling the flower borders looking for flies and spiders to tease (just when they are flowering). Boy its quite now in the garden, what a character though! I have to smile just thinking about him.
Thanks again everyone.

What sad news...
I'm not sure of the full story here, but couldn't the vet have amputated the badly damaged leg? Destruction seems a little drastic, though I appreciate there may have been reasons why it wasn't an option?
Poor dog :(
