Please can somebody help me. I've just put a deposit on a black lab puppy which is absolutely beautiful - although they all were. The owner showed us both Mum's and Dad's papers, and KC registration forms. The puppy we chose has a very, very thin white stripe on it's chest/underbelly - all the rest were jet black. My Uncle has told me that it cannot possibly be a pedigree because it should be all black. Is this true?
Confused.

No, it's not. Even the
Kennel Club standard says that a small white spot on the chest is permissible on show-quality dogs.

Quite a few Labs have a white mark on the chest or on a toe. My own Lucy did.

I had a litter in October last year where 5 of the 6 bitches had a very small white line on the chest. Never had it before in any litter but it did not detract from the fact the pups were extremely well put together, beautiful and very much pedigree labs.

Mattie just out of interest do you think if a lab was shown in the ring with a white spot on the chest it would be held against them?
I have been offered a pup (pick of the litter) and very very nice and I have fallen in love but she has a white spot on her chest. Somebody I spoke to yesterday said they would not put her up if shown infront of them!!!!!!!

The breed standard specifically says that a small white spot on the chest is acceptable. So if the person you spoke to holds it against a dog, they're a bad judge and should do their homework better!

If the person said that then its strange a:because how would she know who else would be there and b: she should judge the whole dog and a least have a snippet of knowledge of the breed standard ;)

Well said Mattie and Jeangenie.
I am going to see the pup again next week so who knows. 3 very nice girls in this litter but the one with the white spot is the one I have fallen for.

This spot may also shrink to nothing depending how big it is.My border collie had a white spot on her back as a puppy and all that remains now is a couple of white hairs that arent noticable unless you are looking for them.Best Wishes Gillian

I have been told that there is one specific line of labradors which often has white on the chest. Unfortunately I can't remember the line name. And yes, they are pedigree.
One of mine has a few white hairs there.
