Topic Dog Boards / General / What can I use to bathe a smelly dog?

My golden retriever simply loves water, and cannot be kept out of the fish pond. After a few days, he really reeks of fish, and has to have a bath. I'm trying not to bathe him too often (right now he has 2 baths a week and daily rinses : ( skin and coat fab though... ...) , and am wondering if anyone has any good suggestions on how to reduce his stinkiness?

Hi

Pets@home do a range of dry shampoos/sprays etc
but never used them myself.

I would be careful letting your pup into the pond in the hot weather as there maybe lots of nasty bugs and algae in there. I would get the pond fenced off asap.

I understand this problem!! My lab used to bathe in our pond too.

I find Aloe Vera Shamppo from Holland & Barrett works well. Its gentle, gives a shiny coat and a nice pong.

Quite honestly the only other way is to remove the pond or fence it off.

The faeces of fish can contain really nasty bugs , how about blocking off the fish pond or setting up a paddling pool and getting your dog to go in there instead? One off those square plastic ones will be good as you dont need to inflate so the dog can not pierce it or anything

Or an above ground pool though the cost around £150 depending on where you get them and there deep so he can swim. Wouldnt take a retriever two minutes to learn how to climb the steps.
Can understand this though as we have a lab and he loves swimming too , we dont have water in our garden but parents in law do , they have a pool and a pond filled with koi , oscar is 16 weeks and knows he can go in the pool but not in the pond! However i do find a wet coat smells anyway pond water or not.

How about a few drops of essential oil (lavender) in a doggy shampoo. Denes do a nice shampoo with essential oils added. I've tried the dry shampoo for when my lab rolls in smelly fox poo and didn't find it much good.
