Topic Other Boards / Foo / Problem with 50 year old aga

The aga has been in the house since new about 50 years ago and since we moved in has been nothing but trouble. It is solid fuel and at first problem was fumes so hubbie pulled down half chimneyt and inserted new flue. It was great at first and hotter than ever. Now it is playing up again. Temp is right down but the whole aga itself is mega hot. It is like the heat is retained in the body of cooker and not in oven or hotplates. have looked for blockage, flue is drawing so what else could it be. Hubbie is talking about stripping it down.(too mean to call experts!!)
Has anyone a diagram that shows what the internal construction shopuld be. we are not sure on what principle it actually works. Coud a ' pipe' have come loose or something.
Any help much appreciated.

You could always get in touch with AGA .... AGA Homepage

You never know , they may be able to help :)

I had considered that but I don't suppose their advice is free. they will probably charge an arm and a leg and need to look at it. That might be my last resort
Thanks :)

Hi

I moved into my house and it had an Aga. Like yours it was solid fuel (note use of past tense :D)
I tried cooking boiled potatoes on it - they took about 3/4 hour just to boil the water. I put jacket potatoes in and forgot them for three months !!! I eventually had it removed cos I didn't get on with it. Too hot in summer and a bit slow for me. (I'm no Delia Smith) :D
Annie

PS When we had it removed, I found 6 black spheres which could have been mistaken for misiles.
You got it !!! the jacket potatoes.

id get the AGA ppl to come an sort it out!
My mate had a couple of solid fuel ones in their big farm house, and her dad used to maintain them, however it damn near killed her grandad, giving off noxious fumes as it wasnt drawing properly, and the daft old duffer had banked it up for the night.

Fortunatley he survived attempted death by AGA, (something to do with young nurses etc, he was that kind of guy!) but it goes to show, they are potentially dangerous things AGA's so be careful with it!

thanks all.Hubbie took Chimney down yesterday and did something or other so will see if that works. If he doesn't get it right soon he too might have death by Aga as i might just use him as solid fuel! :D
