I have always wanted to work with dogs and wander if anyone knows how you would go about becoming a dog groomer, what course, qualifications etc you would need and is it possible to do a part time course and can mature students do the course? I really am very keen to find out as much as possible but wander if I am being too ambitious!
Does anyone know of any other way that I could fulfill my ambition to work with dogs? I was offered a job at a nearby rescue centre but had to turn it down because it was very awkward hours.

Hi
There are dog grooming courses. From beginner to advanced, college courses and private courses but the only way to find them is to ring around the colleges and/or look in dog papers and dog magazines. I found that the ones run by the tertiary college were very good :D From what others on the courses said, the private courses can be very good or you can end up as unpaid labour actually learning very little - it can be a bit of a lottery.
As far as age is concerned, I was a mature student and there were also teenagers on the courses - anyone can do it as long as they are fit enough ( it can be quite a physical job especially if you deal with larger and hairier breeds ) You can end up working in a salon or working for yourself, mobile or from a base so it can be a very flexible way to work. I only work with smaller breeds as I am tiny and really don't feel that grooming huge dogs is for me :)
Hope this helps
Regards
Dill
