has anyone any tips on how to stop an 8 week old akita pup crying when she is put to bed?

Buy her a big teddy from a charity shop. Make sure the eyes and nose are very secure and won't come off to easily.

heh heh, yep, get the teddy, but also where does she sleep? If she is downstairs, away from you, then it is very common for pups to cry for a bit when they are in new surroundings and left alone. This is all very new to her. Unfortunatly, the only thing I can say is "patience". It will take a few sleepless nights but she will eventually get used to the fact that she is safe, and you DO return to her after she has been alone. Be firm, otherwise you will never break the habit.
