I'm soon to get a cavalier dog puppy and need some advice regarding exercise. We've always had irish setters, and restrict their exercise in the first year due to their sudden growth spurts etc and gradually build up exercise to hard exercise at about 12-14 months. This is my first cavalier, and was wondering what type of exercise is best for him. As i plan to show i don't want to risk over or under exercising him, so any advice would be much appreciated!

I am currently counting the days till i pick him up (13!) and really want to do this right!

hi, generally a cavalier will be happy with as much or as little exercise you give!
i usually give mine a good run round the park couple o tomes a day for about 30 mins, but if for whatever reason im unable to they r just as happy with a quick jog round the bloc

Thanks for the advice. My main concern is i don't want to over exercise him, but on the other hand i dont want to under exercise either!

Hi Sami,
I never did get the e-mail, I didn't get quite a few that week because the e-mail system at work went down! But I have found a lovely little blenheim boy, and have named him Lewy. I'm now counting down the days until i pick him up (11!) and am visiting him tomorrow, I'm taking him a toy which smells of me and my yorkie bitch. I'm wandering how much her nose will be put out of joint by the new addition, but i'm sure she'll cope as she adores my mum's irish setters! Thanks again for your help, and i'll keep you posted on his progress.

Cavaliers will take as much or as little as you can manage.Obviously as young puppies it is better to do say, twoo 15 minute sessions. But By the time they are a year old they'll be chasing flushing out the birds.Enjoy your puppy.

Irene,
Thanks for your help in my search for a cav, it was much appreciated. My little boy is from the litter in Leicester that goes back onto delhaze and lymrey lines. I went with the intention of looking at the girls, but he caught my eye the minute i saw him! He's pick of litter as far as the breeder is concerned, so i'll keep my fingers crossed as its so hard to tell and i know so much can change as they grow up! I'll keep you posted as to his progress, i'm sure i'll have a few more questions to ask at some point (10 days till i pick him up!)
