I saw a Golden Retriever that was smaller in size than the average Godlen. The owner said that he got him from a breeder in the UK. Is there a name for a smaller breed of Goldens and if so, where do I find one? Thanks. Linda Deagon

Hi Linda, no there is only one size of Golden retriever, where the males should be between 22 and 24 inches at the shoulder, and the bitches 20 - 22 inches. If you saw one smaller than that, it was either young and not fully-grown, or undersized.
Hope this helps.

The name in 'runt' and they can crop up in any litter :)

By saying that it came from a breeder in the UK I take it that you are not in the UK. If that’s the case then I don't know your breed standard.

I know in Labradors UK standard is Dogs 22-22.5 inches Bitches 21.5-22 whereas the AKC standard is 22.5-24.5 and 21.5-23.5 respectively so Labs in America are predominantly bigger than in the UK.

My Golden Retriever is smaller than the average Retriever, but she was, as Isabel has mentioned, the 'Runt' of her litter; still she's a lovely dog :)
